Meet the woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha)! Weighing in at as much as 22 pounds (10 kilograms), it’s one of the largest primates to inhabit the tropical regions of Central and South America. It’s found in the Amazon rainforest, where it spends most of its time in the treetops. The social animal lives in groups that can range from 10 to as many 70 members! Its favorite meals include ripe fruit, but it also supplements its diet with leaves, seeds, and insects. Last year I returned to my beloved Peru once again, for the fourth time in my life, and for the first time I was able to witness by close quarters some of the most beautiful animals of the Peruvian rainforests. This is a young Peruvian Woolly Monkey (Lagothrix cana tschudii), an endangered species of monkey which is menaced by hunting for meat and sold as a pet when young.
