In the light of many people using tumblr to write because of aesthetic reasons, and losing their fics/poems/posts because tumblr is a little shit, here is:
How to change paper colour in Word, font colour, and get rid of the gray area (as much as possible) in the background.
(bonuses: font size, how to hide/unhide the stuff at the top)
Or, how to go from this
To this.
The post looks daunting, but it’s super user friendly, and once you know your way around those tricks, it takes a few clicks and you’re good to go. Yay!
Open Word, and type something.
Changing background colour.
In the blue banner up top, select the tab called Design, and click on Page Color at the far right. A selection of available colours for your paper on screen will appear.
Some darkest colours will change the font automatically to white (you can change that colour if you want with the next step).
Changing font colour.
Select the Home tab on the left (up in the blue banner), highlight your text (hold the left button of the mouse while you mouse over the text), and click on the little arrow to the right of the A with a red square underneath. It will give you font colour options.
Select a colour and tadaaa!
Getting rid of the gray sides.
I have, to this day, not found how to change the colour of the actual software background. So.
Select the View tab and then click on Page Width (pretty much in the middle, in the Zoom section).
It does this (it zooms), leaving just a little gray on the sides.
If you don’t like it and want to go back, click on the page with an arrow, labeled 100%. It takes you back to the original size.
You can, alternatively, use the zoom tool at the bottom right of the screen, sliding the cursor with your mouse or clicking on the - and + signs. (or even click on the 100% and play with the options)
This is blown up 230%. No more gray!
Changing font size.
Select the Home tab, highlight your text and change the font size in the drop-down menu that has a number. You can also type in a number of your choice.
Yeah 2 is a bit small lol
Hide/Reveal the gray banner at the top.
You really want your whole screen to be just your text. Super. Here’s how.
Look all the way to the right, there’s a little arrow thing. Click it.
Bam. No more header.
Holy crap you need it back? Just click on any tab (Home, Insert, etc.). And now look at the same spot, on the right. There’s a little pushpin, you click it to lock the header (ribbon) back in place.
If you don’t want to lock it back in place just click anywhere in your text or the blue up top and it will disappear again.
Get rid of the numbers at the top.
That thing with numbers at the top is bugging you?
It’s the ruler. Select View tab and uncheck the ruler checkbox.
