Projection Mapping
Our group decided that for that last piece we would attempt something far out of our comfort zone and use the chance to explore something with experiences tutors on hand. There was a lot of discussion about Projection Mapping and with the subject matter of ‘Emergency situations’ we thought it would be a good opportunity to create an installation that is expressive and interpretable, whilst holding some ‘real life’ styled objects (e.g blocks to represent buildings).
I liked this projection mapping and it inspired me with its use of shapes. We wanted to create something that wasn't too much real imagery and more using shapes and colours to express the emotions of the situation were presenting. The wave like lines would be perfect for the beginning of the piece were we are trying to create a tranquil, calm state of mind; representing gentle waters that most people relate to relaxation. I would consider layering some of these patterns to create a more manic look as the piece gets more and more erratic.
Out of all the projection mapping pieces I have seen, this was one of my favourites. It really pushed the boundaries of the quite colourless, geometric styles that I had seen before and added an incredible artistic flare. The use of the dripping paint is definitely something I will consider taking forward; if we go forward with doing 9/11 or another situation involving the collapse of a building it could be an amazing way to do that without being too obvious, or offensive with its approach. It also made me think about colour theory and this multi-colour giving me a child-like, giddy feel to the piece and it has made me consider how we may use colour to evoke emotion in our audiences without the use of full, filmed footage.
