If I could jump into this book like a painting in blue's clues I would.
I love Wendell SO much, he's just so certain of his love for Emily in every moment. He doesn't waffle or falter, just loves her and trusts her to resolve the situation, and saves her when she can't.
I love the world building, I love the characters, I love how uncomplicated the plot is, and I love Wendell. Also, I want to see these trees they refuse to describe. The fact that Poe is back for the second book!! I love him and his fancy new tree, I wish could get a loaf of his bread.
Am I surprised there's going to be a third book? A little bit, I was hoping to jump into battle in this one, but I'm here for it and I'm excited to be able to learn even more about Wendell's home.
Tragic heroes always moan when the gods take an interest in them, but it's the people the gods ignore who get the really tough deals.

New favorite Hazelwood book. Eli is best boy.
I feel like her writing is getting better with every book. This one felt much more real than her others, even though I also loved her other books.
I wonder if there will be a spin-off with some of the other characters from this story, it felt like some things were left unsaid about Eli's sister and Hark, but maybe not. There were some frustrating moments but at least they felt like realistically frustrating moments and not super forced just for plot movement.
I really liked Rue, too. She's a good MC to follow.
Like always, I stay wondering which fandom Ali drew inspiration from for this, if she does still pull from fandom for writing inspiration.
As a fandom girlie myself, I always wonder 👀
