Hii, so, this i've been debating whether to send this ask or not because it sounds very silly, but you're the first blog i come across that explains this religious accurately and give good sources to research it. Thanks to you, i realised the things i was doing wrong and i'm doing my best to approach the greek polytheism as respectully as possible,. I still have a long way to go and research, but i have more confidence thanks to this blog
My question is, is it compulsory that i pray first and last to Hestia before praying to any other God? For example, I'm begging Hermes to help me with my driving license exam this Friday (which it's another question to me, is it okay to ask God Hermes for help on this anyway?) and every time I include Hestia before mentioning him, and once I'm done with my prayer to Him, i end it up with another to Her. Is that necessary, or it's just a preference depending of the practicioner? A way to show respect because Hestia is literally the First and the Last Goddess? Pls correct me if i'm wrong on this
I have the most difficulty when it comes to prayers because i fumble with their titles and how i should call them, but i always thank them for everything first, praise them and only then ask a favour. I hope that's enough. I'm currently reading the Homeric Hymns and on the way to do the same with the Orphic Hymns in hopes they help me with this. I also heard plays are very useful to learn, so is there one in particular you recommend?
I'm so sorry the ask got too long, i just really wanna know because i want to do this right. I truly wish to worship the Gods, and i want to do it properly.
Thanks!! Pls keep going with this blog. It's incredibly helpful and interesting to read 💕
Ya su, and best of luck on your driving license exam! Thank you so much for the good words
Of course it's appropriate to ask Hermes for help with your exam! Hermes is associated with travel, roads, and also with learning, communication, and quick thinking, all of which are relevant here.
The “first and last” idea comes from Hestia often receiving the first and last libations at feasts and sacrifices in ancient Greek religion, because of her role as the hearth at the center of home and city. In most homes and public settings, it was normal (even the “right” thing to do) to start a proper sacrifice or libation with Hestia, since throwing the offerings in the hearth fire (aka the "hestia") was how offerings were made.
But, just to be clear, the evidence we have doesn’t show that people were required to start every small or casual prayer with mentioning Hestia. In antiquity, what mattered was that she got her share of the sacrifices and the first libation, not that you couldn’t speak to another god first about something unrelated. However, if you make a small ritual and throw things into the fire, it would be "proper" to address her, of course.
You can still honor Hestia and structure your worship meaningfully without a physical hearth or open flame, by designating a symbolic “hearth space” and using safe substitutes like candles or even electric lights. Some Hellenic polytheistic groups and practitioners treat the kitchen stove or the dining table as the “hearth” of the home, since the ancient hearth was mainly about the center of family life and shared food. A small home shrine in such a place, even without fire, can function as your household center for Hestia. But if you can include some fire, always with safety first, it would be optimal.
I hope this information helps!
