Focus on Discrimination and Bullying continues

Given this is such an important topic in the fandom and beyond right now, we are continuing our focus on discrimination and bullying for another week here at action1dproject. We will continue to work with World Almighty to highlight issues of discrimination and bullying throughout this week.

Taking a stand against Discrimination and Bullying with Action1dproject 

Monday 17 August - Sunday 23 August

This week Action1dproject will be focussing our attention on discrimination and bullying in all it’s forms. Whether it is race-based discrimination, workplace harassment, cyber-bullying or discrimination because of gender, sexuality or religion, we are taking a stand against these issues in the fandom and beyond.

We are particularly proud to be collaborating with World Almighty to present a series of posts throughout the week to raise awareness and understanding of other cultures, and discuss how we can reduce and prevent discrimination on the basis of nationality and culture in the fandom.

We are using the hashtag #TakeAStandWithAction1D on both twitter and tumblr so retweet and reblog, or use the tag to get your voice heard.

What does this have to do with action/1D and Action2015?

Though Action/1D is closed for submissions, the project and Action2015 continues ahead of two critical summits.  One in September that will result in new global goals – a framework to end all forms of poverty, discrimination, and inequality. The other summit in December will set new climate action targets – a crucial step towards a safer planet. 

In the lead up to these summits Action1dproject and World Almighty will continue to highlight issues that affect the fandom and the world. This week we want to discuss discrimination and bullying in particular because they have  both significantly impacted our fandom and fans more generally. And the initiatives that have resulted to combat them have been inspiring.

Can I get involved?

Yes we would love to hear from you. Send an ask, tell us a story, or even a video about how discrimination and bullying effects you and your life, and your world. Just as importantly are stories about how you or your family and community have taken a stand on these issues.

Ramadan has come to an end, so first of all Eid Mubarak to all who are celebrating!

As you know, during the past month we have been sharing and learning about each other’s cultures through the 1 Thing Campaign, which ends tomorrow (July 18th). So if you still haven’t participated and you wish to do so, you’ve got one more day!

You can share anything that you find interesting about (one of) your culture(s) and tag it with #1thing and #worldalmighty. If you need inspiration, you can find examples on our blog or in those tags.

You have an opinion and it’s valid, you have a voice and it deserves to be heard. 1DHQ has the power to make your voice heard and they are using it. Please, please, please, make use of this occasion to speak up and get heard.

“Equal rights and social justice are important. LGBT-rights are important. We pride ourselves on living in free societies, where it’s not okay to condemn people for features they have no control over. Those are our values, but we haven’t achieved what we wanted, yet. LGBT* people are in danger for their lives, and discriminated against, all over the world, still. Ethnic differences are cause for strife, and ethnicities erased to ‘fit in’, all over the world, still. And young teenage girls are taught their opinions, their fantasies, their wishes, have NO value, all over the world, still.

I am not here to ‘prove’ Louis and Harry are in a relationship. I already know that they are, and when people have asked me why I believe such or so, I have been happy to oblige them, teaching them a little bit about theory of knowledge, and about reasoning, in the process. But that’s not why I am here.

I am here because I know a free society needs lots of work. Freedom of speech, the right to privacy, equal rights: you can’t just say “we’ve said it’s important in our constitution and our human rights covenants, so have them, it’s fine” and sit on your ass and do nothing and wait for everything the generations before us achieved to disintegrate again. It takes special attention to hold up those values in every aspect of our lives, it takes people speaking up for them when we see they are being trodden, anywhere, by anyone. The bad guys are not just dictators in ‘developing countries’ and the semi-dictatorial regime in Russia. The bad guys are everywhere, and we are the bad guys when we don’t say anything about it, because in the end “all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke, British politician)”

^^^^ Probably the most important paragraphs I have ever written on this blog. I wanted to get them out again today to encourage everyone to take part in this FANTASTIC ACTION by 1D by addressing the importance of non-discrimination across the board (LGBTQ+, ethnicity, gender, age,...) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the next 15 years. You have an opinion and it’s valid, you have a voice and it deserves to be heard. 1DHQ has the power to make your voice heard and they are using it. Please, please, please, make use of this occasion to speak up and get heard. World Leaders need to hear what you have to say because they never hear voices from people like you. This is so incredibly important. For you, and for people who are left behind all over the world.

The 1 Thing Challenge caught my eye and I wanted to contribute. I’m Canadian and well, this is a term of endearment towards friends that is often used as a joke even though it’s technically a derogatory term similar to calling someone a loser. It was coined in the 1980s from a show called The Great White North featured the Mackenzie brothers. It’s not always used by Canadians and it often used to imitate us, but, at least where I’m from, we use it to make fun of ourselves and my father is quite fond of it. So I thought that it would be a funny thing to contribute about what Canada is about, being easy going and accepting and even making fun of ourselves.

TAKE ACTION WITH 1D AND SUPPORT INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT

One Direction announced their partnership with Action2015 to campaign for a better future and asking our involvement to call upon world leaders to set ambitious goals to fight poverty, inequality and climate change. RainbowDirection/Takemehomefromnarnia and World Almighty see this as a chance for all of us to make a very real difference in the world. We are thousands, and if we bring our voices together, we can bring about more positive change than if we work alone.

In 2015 the Millennium Development Goals expire. This September, world leaders will set new development goals for the next fifteen years to tackle climate change, as well as poverty and inequality, worldwide. This is important to every single one of us, and it’s important that the goals that are set are inclusive of all genders, orientations, religions, ethnicities, etc because discrimination leads to inequality, poverty and the slowing down of development.

In countries where discrimination of LGBTQ+ people and people of certain religions, genders and ethnicities is reinforced by the law, these people do not enjoy equal rights to education (due to bullying or simple lack of access), housing (being disowned by family), and health (HIV/AIDS prevention). These inequalities are unacceptable in themselves, and they can also lead to entire communities being deprived of resources for development, as demonstrated by the story of Alex and Michael, two gay Ugandan men, recounted here.

Therefore, please join us in getting world leaders to make ambitious commitments to inclusive development. Your voice could influence world leaders at two crucial United Nations summits later in the year. And as part of Rainbow Direction/Takemehomefromnarnia and World Almighty, let’s join forces to increase our chances of being visible and having our voices heard.

We think that the world leaders should explicitly condemn discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, as well as religion, race, ethnicity and cultural identity. They should also call for data on the experiences of LGBTQ+ people and other minorities.

So let’s tell them about our experiences! Of course, our diversity is our biggest asset. There may be many world issues you feel passionate about, and we encourage you to speak about all of those in your submission. As members of the Rainbow Direction and World Almighty communities we encourage you to also include your personal experiences of discrimination in your submission, and to accompany that with a warm plea for world leaders to make eradication of discrimination an explicit goal for the future. You could include the above recommendation as well. And one thing’s for sure - the more rainbows, the more diversity, the better!

Celebrate. We can make a difference if we come together. Record a short video of you and/or your friends celebrating rainbow-style

Dear Leader... Record a max. 30 seconds long video of yourself telling your leaders/government what things you want to see changed for the LGBTQ+ community in your country/state/county. Remember to start with “Dear...” Here is an overview on homophobic laws in countries worldwide

“I am a...” Record a video telling Action1D that you are a member and/or supporter of the LGBTQ+ community or a Rainbow Directioner in less than 5 additional words!  Examples: X

Moving together. Record a short video of you wearing rainbow/pride socks, laces or shoes (or little rainbows on your shoes) or kicking a rainbow coloured ball.  

Post a link to your video(s) on your blog and tag them #rainbow direction and #world almighty. We will make them into a compilation and share them further!

1Thing about Småland, Sweden

I’m from a province in Sweden called “Småland”, which directly translated means “land of the little people”. It’s a province that has a lot of deep forests and a lot of tiny, black lakes with waterlilies growing in them. This is also one of the provinces most deeply seeped in folklore, with lots and lots of old stories about fairies, trolls and forest fae of all kind.

One of my favourite things is being out in the woods in Småland in June. It’s not far enough north for the sun to stay up through the night, but it never truly gets dark either. The nights in June are somewhere between night and day, in a way that’s neither twilight nor dawn, but a mix of both and, at the same time, neither--amazing to experience and nearly impossible to explain. One of my all-time favourite Swedish poets comes quite close, though:

Now the sun barely sets, Only dims its light. Twilight-edge turns dawning hour, Not quite early, not quite late.

The lake holds the evening light, Floats it on the water mirror, or has it trip on waves which long before they grow dark reflect the flames of the morning sun.

Night of June never happens, looks at most like a dewey day. Like a veil its twilight lightens, and is carried off on light-filled seas.

In short, summer nights in Småland feel like a little bit of fairy tale magic. :)
