Any thoughts on the World Maker update to Mario Maker 2?
It’s nice to know Nintendo wasn’t ignoring Super Mario Maker 2, but I wish they would have put out smaller, more incremental updates. Something to let us know that more content was coming, instead of dumping these two huge updates on us and then peacing out.
Like, this is a lesson Valve used to teach mod developers, right. Update early, update often. Doesn’t matter how small the update is, push it out weekly, maybe even daily. Show that active development is occurring, that support for the project is ongoing. It doesn’t have to be a full on software update, but screenshots, or something. Anything.
Imagine a world where the World Maker update came out months ago and we knew about the run up to the final update so we could actually make requests. Like, say, being able to upload more than one World. Having better discovery tools for player-made worlds. Being able to name Worlds. Being able to more easily track worlds you started but haven’t finished playing yet.
Instead, it’s some kind of Monkey’s Paw half-wish where, like, technically Nintendo gave me what I wanted, but they twisted some of the conditions in weird ways. But that’s it! That was the final update! Mario Maker 2 is done now! Live with it! Whatever you don’t like about the game at this point is the way it’s going to stay until Mario Maker 3, if they even make one!
And in what’s become increasingly common for Nintendo, they put this update out and didn’t even tell people about everything they changed. Beyond all of the new power-ups, silent changes were made to the tagging system and leaderboard sorting. Did Nintendo tell anyone? No, fans had to dig in and find it themselves. Because telling people about ALL of the new features is apparently too much work.
But overall it’s a good update. It’s really starting to stoke my fires of creativity. I’m starting to think about what levels I want to make, because I’d like to build a full-length 8 world game, if possible. But I need to assess what’s doable.
