A couple of years back, I took a quiz with a simple premise: given a blank world map, successfully locate all 154 countries within twenty minutes. I did it, and with five minutes to spare. Now, granted, I couldn't do it again if you put a gun to my head, but by all the gods, at least I pulled it off once. Probably one of the highlights of my life. (I know, I know. Some people wrestle lions or engage in aerial dogfights; I...take Internet quizzes. Please don't judge.)

watching ted lasso made me realize that i wasn’t sure how close ghana and nigeria are to each other so i’ve spent the past three days re-teaching myself the entire world map and it turns out there are a LOT of places that are technically nations but don’t get treated as such on the map unless you go digging - like i was aware of Vatican City (a city-state) and Monaco (a city-state / “microstate” according to google maps) but there’s also San Marino (a microstate) and Malta (an entire very small nation) and Brunei (also an entire very small nation) not to mention places like Tibet (a fucking “autonomous region” of China) and of course Hong Kong (a “special administrative region” of China) but then there’s also places like Seychelles which is technically an African island nation but only referred to as an “archipelago” in google maps or New Caledonia which should absolutely be a nation but instead remains a fucking French territory did you know there are fourteen entire separate nations in Oceania but there would be like twenty if the USA, France, and New Zealand would release those territories like why does fucking Guam belong to the US??

ALSO. did y’all know that Bosnia is now called “Bosnia and Herzegovina”? AND. there’s a country in Africa called Western Sahara but it’s a different size/shape on different maps because that is contested territory babyyyy. AND. some maps include Palestine as a little sliver inside Israel while others maps don’t indicate Palestine at all. ALSO. South Sudan. ALSO. Swaziland is Eswatini now. ALSOOOO. the United Kingdom is ~always~ depicted as one big blob so if you wanna know where Wales is then fuck you.

anyway this is how watching ted lasso has made me a smarter more irritating person 👍

That "world's most populous city poll" started me wondering how many countries* those cities have a bigger population than...

Tokyo's population (37,435,191) is bigger than that of 170 countries, including Saudi Arabia's (36,952,585) and Ukraine's (36,758,716). In comparison, Canada has a population of 38,784,727.

Delhi's population (29,399,141) is bigger than that of 159 countries, including Cote D'Ivoire's (28,880,603) and Venezuela's (28,844,390)

Shanghai's population (26,317,104) is bigger than that of 154 countries, including North Korea's (26,161,743) and Taiwan's (23,923,572). In comparison, Australia has a population of 26,441,853.

São Paulo's and Mexico City's populations (21,846,507 and 21,671,908) are bigger than those of 148 countries, including Malawi (20,937,323) and Zambia (20,575,606)

And the populations of Cairo (20,484,965), Mumbai (20,185,064), Beijing (20,035,455), and Dhaka (20,283,552) are bigger than those of 146 countries, including Romania (19,889,414) and Chile (19,629,887)
