Ai Giochi dello scorso anno, Khelif ha conquistato l'oro nei pesi welter alla fine di un torneo in cui è stata coinvolta nel 'caso' legato alla sua identità sessuale. L'atleta, che in passato è stata bandita dall'IBA (federazione non riconosciuta dal Cio), ha partecipato alla competizione femminile alle Olimpiadi. Nella comunicazione alla federazione algerina, Wolrd Boxing spiega che i test sono previsti per "tutti gli atleti di età superiore ai 18 anni che desiderano partecipare a una competizione di proprietà o autorizzata da World Boxing". I pugili "dovranno sottoporsi a un test genetico PCR (reazione a catena della polimerasi) per determinare il sesso alla nascita e la loro idoneità a competere. Il test, eseguito con un tampone, si basa su "una tecnica di laboratorio utilizzata per rilevare materiale genetico specifico, in questo caso il gene SRY, che rivela la presenza del cromosoma Y, indicatore del sesso biologico. Il test può essere effettuato tramite tampone nasale/orale, saliva o sangue.  Gli atleti considerati maschi alla nascita, come dimostrato dalla presenza di materiale genetico del cromosoma Y (gene SRY), o con una differenza di sviluppo sessuale (DSD) in cui si verifica l'androgenizzazione maschile, saranno idonei a competere nella categoria maschile". "Le atlete considerate di sesso femminile alla nascita, come dimostrato dalla presenza di cromosomi XX o dall'assenza di materiale genetico del cromosoma Y (gene SRY), o con una DSD in cui non si verifica androgenizzazione maschile, potranno competere nella categoria femminile", si spiega. Le Federazioni Nazionali saranno responsabili dei test e saranno tenute a confermare il sesso dei propri atleti al momento dell'iscrizione alle competizioni World Boxing, fornendo una certificazione del loro sesso cromosomico, determinato tramite un test PCR. "La mancata presentazione della certificazione del sesso di un atleta o la presentazione di una certificazione falsa renderà l'atleta ineleggibile a competere e potrebbe comportare sanzioni nei suoi confronti e/o contro la sua Federazione Nazionale", afferma World Boxing. "Se i risultati dei test per pugili che desiderano competere nella categoria femminile rivelassero la presenza di materiale genetico del cromosoma Y e una potenziale DSD, gli screening iniziali saranno indirizzati a specialisti clinici indipendenti per screening genetici, profili ormonali, esami anatomici o altre valutazioni dei profili endocrini da parte di medici specialisti", spiega ancora l'organismo.
