Between battle sections in Wildermyth, the party is free to explore the overworld as time passes, completing various tasks and finding new story beats as they travel. In addition to acquiring new equipment and gaining alliances, as time passes throughout the game the enemies the player encounters grow stronger too, gaining benefits, monster types, and abilities previously unseen. This ensures that even if players are spending extra time building up their reserves and exploring every part of the map, the enemies will continue to keep pace with them throughout the play experience.

The pairing of two core gameplay loops of Wildermyth (branching narratives and grid-based tactical combat) each work to ensure that a game with an impressive degree of customization and choice doesn’t become unnecessarily overwhelming for the player. Decisions are carefully siloed into individual sections that are only shown as they become important to the player. This is even apparent in the game’s UI, where the characters and visual information is always shown at the game’s top two-thirds, with all the cards or choices available to the player run along the bottom third of the screen when they become relevant.
