Worm Naga
“Kyuss Monsters” by Eva Widermann, © Paizo Publishing. Accessed at the Dungeon 130 Map and Handout Supplement here
[When I ran “The Spire of Long Shadows”, the worm nagas kicked my PCs asses. Their nastiest ability was a feeblemind gaze, which doesn’t merely kill a PC, just renders them useless. I toned that gaze down, and changed their spell list to distinguish them more from both the avolakias and the wormcallers.]
Worm Naga This loathsome beast appears as a fat green worm with a disturbingly human face. A tangle of patchy hair grows from its head.
The worm nagas were a creation of Kyuss when he was a mortal, an experiment in combining worm and man without infestation and conversion into the undead. Worm nagas were formed from fleshwarping on mortal spellcasters, creating a creature that appears as a parody of the naga form. Unlike most of Kyuss’ other creations, not all worm nagas are allies or servitors of the Wormgod. They can reproduce by themselves, and in some remote places are colonies of worm nagas that have never heard of Kyuss. Despite this, they are almost universally evil and cruel, viewing other life as toys for their amusement or as food.
A worm naga specializes in non-lethal combat, spreading paralysis with its bite and sapping the minds of its foes with its gaze. Most worm naga dens are surrounded by feebleminded creatures—victims in passing that the worm naga could not be bothered to kill. Different worm nagas may have different spell lists, but most of them have at least a passing interest in necromancy. Kyuss worms recognize them as one of their own, and they can fight safely from within a swarm of ravenous worms.
Worm nagas are simultaneous hermaphrodites, and when two mate they both impregnate the other. They lay a single leathery egg case, in which gestates up to a dozen worm naga young. Despite this, anything more than a single birth is rare—the first worm naga to develop teeth devours its siblings before it is born, and hatches well developed and half-grown. They can live for hundreds of years if not slain—longer if dwelling in unholy sites infused with Kyuss’ power.
