[NEW REVIEW] "The Intern" (2015) ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ . . Rating: PG-13 Genre: Comedy Runtime: 121 minutes . . REVIEW: I watched this in the cinema when it came out and I enjoyed it at the time. I watched it again recently. This is a nice little film. It’s sweet. Directed by Nancy Meyer, there’s not a whole to of room to go wrong. Robert DeNiro leads the cast, followed closely by Anne Hathaway. They’re not to actors I would have associated with one another at all before this film, but in an actual fact they worked really well together. I really like their characters’ (Ben and Jules) relationship throughout the film. Their friendship is incredibly endearing and we fall in love with it easily very early on.  Even the friendships that Ben makes with the rest of his co-workers is very endearing and entertaining as well. [NEW REVIEW] "Moulin Rouge" (2001) ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ . . Rating: PG-13 Genre: Drama, Musical & Romance Runtime: 126 minutes . . REVIEW: Well, you can tell immediately it was directed by Baz Luhrmann. His distinct feel in a movie is evident from the word go. His chaotic-like mark is stamped immediately.  The shots move very swiftly as Christian begins to narrate his tale to us, the audience. The whole first scene is a bit bizarre, to say the least. Just as he sits down to his typewriter “an unconscious Argentinean” falls through the roof, “quickly followed by a dwarf dressed as a nun”. I have to say I find that his movies can be a bit disorientating during the first few scenes as you’re getting into the story and being introduced to the characters. Their dialogue here is quite rushed and each shot, as I say, moves really swiftly...which wouldn’t be my favourite attribute of his directing but nonetheless we get over that soon enough. All the characters so far, bar Christian, are all dressed in very bizarre attire and appear a bit surreal, if not outrageous. However, the fluidity of the story is good (considering the bizarre beginning) as, despite all this chaotic-feel, a plausible explanation is offered as to how he ended up at the Moulin Rouge. – He must step in for the unconscious Argentinean, and after having a bright idea, is dressed up as a professional writer so he can write their big play “Spectacular Spectacular”. The shots continue to move back and forth from present to past as Christian is typing his story for us to see. Of course, this is a musical, so once the decision has been made they decide to break open a bottle of Absinthe and into song and dance for the next few minutes. Nicole Kidman is really great in this movie. One of her best, I would say. Ewan McGregor, while I haven’t actually seen any of his other movies so I have nothing to compare, plays Christian well too. [NEW REVIEW] "Gravity" (2013) ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ . . Rating: PG-13 Genre: Drama, Science Fiction & Fantasy Runtime: 91 minutes . . REVIEW: This is a really good film. It takes a while to get into. It’s quite slow paced. But once it gets going it’s quite remarkable to watch. I find it amazing how they managed to make an almost 2 hour film with just Sandra Bullock and just the space setting, it’s so simple. It’s all plain sailing for quite a while and then the drama sort of crops up slowly out of nowhere and all of a sudden you’re thrown into this emotional battle for this woman to get back down to earth all on her own. I know George Clooney is there for a while but the majority of the film is all about her struggle. Fair dos to Sandra Bullock. She gives a great performance. I think a lot of films about space tend to glorify the whole experience. It is astonishing, don’t take me wrong. But this film seems to put more emphasis on the dangers and frightening predicaments one could land themselves in taking part in such an experience. Whereas other films focus more onto the wonder of it all. I feel like anyone with dreams of being an astronaut may rethink their life ambition after watching this… It’s one of those films you have to really pay attention to. It’s very visually orientated. Blink and you’ll miss something and wonder how they got where they are now. It’s very character orientated as well. Space just happens to be the backdrop to what is more or less a woman’s struggle with grief over her daughter’s death. At least, that’s what I took from the film. The backdrop is pretty beautiful though. There are some really gorgeous shots. I think because of such slow pacing this might not necessarily be everybody’s cup of tea. I was surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did. I hadn’t been so intrigued by the trailers when it first came out. Hence why it took me so long to watch it!
