you think you pull the strings, though you are nothing but a marionette
(Warning for body horror, gore and implied death.)
There are certain traits that are gifted by magic. Sometimes, this is a badge of honor.
Sometimes this is a warning.
Storm wizards gain scars for particularly ingenious feats of magic. Lightning bolts of various metallic colors grace them, the scars raised and jagged and dangerous. Gold and silver and bronze, they seem to glitter in the light, far more beautiful than any jewelry. Sometimes the scars shift, and every nerve feels struck by lighting, the worst pain imaginable. Thunder booms like a gunshot resounding in the storm wizard’s skull. They stumble, but they can’t fall. They have to stay on their toes, so they can control the storm brewing inside of them.
Ice wizards gain weapons enhanced from their own body for particularly clever feats of magic. Their teeth and fingernails lengthen, becoming blue tinged and diamond-like fangs and claws. They’re colder than ever, and their new attributes are like icicles in their mouth and on their hands. Oh, they use them, these slowly grown and cultivated gifts. The glass-like surfaces stain pink with shed blood most beautifully, though the impulse to use them doesn’t come from their own mind.
Fire wizards gain the ability to call their chosen magic to them at any time for particularly passionate feats of magic. The way the flames lick at their fingers, yet do not burn the skin, is reminiscent of a tamed dog, happy though it is bound to an owner. When misused, the fire reminds the wizard that yes, it can be tamed, but dogs descended from wolves. The flames decide whether they shall burn the wizard’s skin, not the wizard.
Death wizards gain decay for particularly desperate feats of magic. Their hair thins, falling out and leaving them mangey and despairing. Then, their skin will slowly flake away, unless provoked by more injurious necromancy, in which great slabs of skin shall disconnect, revealing the bone and greying muscle underneath. Their heart shall go next, though the amount of time suffering, waiting until it finally stops beating, is up to the darkness that the death wizard decided to house in their soul.
Myth wizards gain sight for particularly astute feats of magic. They gain eyes, all differing hues from their original two. The eyes seem to have minds of their own, even if the myth wizard can see through them, but cannot control what they gaze upon. They gain more and more eyes as their body becomes more in tune with their magic, and eventually the eyes will grant more in-depth, more precise, visions. Someday, the rest of the myth wizard’s existence will be ruled by vision after vision. The eyes won’t blink in surprise at this, and a wizard resigned to their fate won’t either.
Life wizards gain antlers for particularly profound feats of magic. These antlers are bone-white, and often decorated with flowers and other flora, even attracting birds hoping for a short respite from their flight. The antlers grown in time, the more points gained becoming a symbol of a battle-worn healer. Some day, the antlers will become too heavy, the weight too much for a mortal skull. That is the day when the life wizard’s existence comes to an end, a reminder of how fleeting life can be, even if nurtured by the gentlest hands.
Balance wizards gain wings for particularly acuminous feats of magic. The wings are soft and golden colored, feathers and muscles that are at first useless, too small and weak. They grow with more fair magic, more honorable judgements. Slowly, the wings become like extra limbs rather than dead weight, and soon, the wizard can fly. However, if they become selfish, working for their own gain rather than working towards the balance of the Spiral, their wings will begin to weigh them down, the gilded looking feathers solidifying until it is as if the feathers are made of pure gold. The wizard will drop like a stone, as the justified punishment will always be dealt midair.
A person who gains all of these traits, yet never lets themselves be ruled, is truly the strongest wizard in the Spiral. This has never happened, though.
