Book 1 Chapter 4: Soul of the Hero

Link had been hoping for a rest, but that hope vanished the moment he saw the uproar in the queen's camp. The sentries ran to greet him as soon as they recognised him and his men, their voices tangled and incomprehensible but clearly urgent.

"One at a time!" shouted Proxi, popping up from her nest in a fold of his scarf. He sent her a flash of gratitude and amusement and felt her silent giggle in response.

Word had gone back and Lazis, one of the senior captains, pushed forward. "Captain Link," he said. "Something's happened - come to the queen's tent and I'll brief you."

Link nodded, gave a few quick orders to his own commanders and followed Lazis. He was surprised to arrive in the tent and find it empty.

"Where's the queen?" he asked.

Lazis turned to face him. "That's the problem," he said. "She disappeared three days ago."

Link tensed, a cold shock going through him, and his throat closed up, strangling the questions he wanted to ask.

Fortunately, he had Proxi. She flew up to perch on his ear and asked on his behalf, "What happened?"

"She was patrolling the edge of camp when some sort of magic light surrounded her. She called for help, but before we could reach her she had disappeared. We've received no messages and found no more trace of her."

"Can you take me to the site?" asked Proxi.

Lazis nodded and Link followed him out to the edge of camp, aware as he went of an uncomfortable heaviness in the air, as if a storm was building. He kept instinctively glancing up at the sky, but it was clear and blue, no sign of the thunderhead that he could almost feel.

Lazis pointed to a spot among the trees, a little way beyond the sentry patrol line but still in sight, exactly the sort of place he knew Zelda might have gone to get a moment's peace and space. He turned once more to face Link while talking to him - a gesture he appreciated - but then his eyes went wide.

"Captain!" he cried.

In the same moment, Link felt a jolt through his body, as if he'd been struck by lightning, though without the pain. It locked his muscles in place. He gasped, feeling Proxi's momentary fear, doing his best to comfort her though he himself had no idea what was happening.

He blinked, and when he opened his eyes again the camp, Lazis' concerned face, and the soldiers running towards them were gone, replaced with a silent, empty cluster of ruined stone buildings. Whatever magic had been holding him released him and he collapsed to his knees, but he immediately scrambled back to his feet, drawing his sword and shrugging his shield onto his arm as he went to put his back to one of the crumbling walls.

For a moment he was absolutely still, looking around, but there was no movement apart from the soft waving of grass in the wind and a bird flying overhead.

Anything? he asked Proxi.

Not that I can hear, she replied.

How did that treat you?

I'm fine. Shaken, same as you.

He sighed in relief. Keep close, keep listening

She sent him a quick feeling of agreement and he felt a moment's shifting warmth as she huddled down closer into his scarf, making sure she was out of the way and wouldn't be thrown clear if he suddenly moved. He noticed with a smile that she had also moved closer to the brooch that held it secure at his shoulder; he had a small bodkin attached to the back of it that would serve her as a sword if she needed it.

If she needed it, something had gone badly wrong, but it wouldn't be the first time.

LUtober Prompt 9: Battle

Then, in a flash of light, Proxi sped out from his scarf, the bodkin from his brooch clutched in her hand. Link's captor startled, then yelled in pain as she stabbed him in the hand.

Proxi from Hyrule Warriors.

This is a design for my Linkmeet Word of Wisdom, but I think it also works for her more generally. I enjoyed giving her her own little scarf.

Today's challenges: pose, her culottes, her ponytail.

I didn't deliberately cut her feet off; I started drawing too close to the edge of the paper.
