in other news, jim hoagland is in beirut, southern virginia is underwater, there's a ceasefire in ireland (which won't last a month), and john sirica sentences a black guy to die when the white guy who hired him to kill his wife gets life in prison. dc has not (and to this 2026 day) executed anyone since 1957; furman v georgia is decided exactly one week from (1972) today; the only person that can pardon in dc is the president. #justwashingtonianthings

apparently yesterday's jack anderson column was about fbi files on "black nationalists," in case you were wondering if anything in the world has ever changed (no)

also in dc: the smithsonian bookstore opens!!!!!! in what is now the american history museum (home of the best exhibit, entertainment nation) but then called the Museum of History & Technology. in looking up when the name changed, wikipedia has given me THIS delightful anecdote:

....especially since a couple days before, there was a story on a portrait of a white supremacist being up in the portrait gallery (in an exhibit on presidential losers) and they didn't take down THAT. hm!

back to business: woodward alert! but other than the lincoln continental with the vanity plate WIGS (of which there's NO photo, grr) it's pretty uninteresting. ironically, there's a watergate story right underneath it, just not from the boys. instead:

in july 72, union workers settle with wmata (washington metropolitan area transit authority) to resume construction on the metro after 2 months; in 2025, yet another in a long line of dmv area bus strikes begins and fails, none of them as effective as the 1978 metro wildcat strike as union bargaining power is decimated

in july 72, pepco wants to defray rising energy costs by building a nuclear power plant in maryland (they don't); in 2026, pepco has an ad campaign going to try to convince customers to apply for federal aid to get themselves solar panels, amid backlash over rate hikes in maryland and dc

in july 72, a man was shot in line at a methadone clinic; in 2026, the national guard is wandering around downtown with narcan, which ig is our public health policy now. also, we've both got dipshits trying to shoot politicians, badly,

4 women sued a restaurant chain in alexandria for firing them over their protesting the restaurant cutting their (painfully meager) salaries and forcing them to pay taxes from their tips; in july 1972, the courts dismissed the case, ruling that the management's action was totally legal. the taxes were $1.65/hr

the past few years, the restaurant lobby has been working hard to block initiatives to raise the tipped minimum wage in dc, even after it passed with 74% for in the 22 general election, as city council (our highest govt below federal) repeatedly pass emergency legislation to stop pay raises; in july 2026, dc's tipped minimum wage will finally increase to $10.30/hr, from $10/hr. in 2021 it was $5.05/hr

in 2026, even think tanks understand that there's a housing crisis in dc, with 1 in 10 ""experiencing"" ""insecurity"" while bowser's idea of tenancy rights was written by developers (+ whatever this was)

today's headlines include more peace talks, ralph nader talks shit about bureaucrats, and mcgovern eats a polish sausage (not clickbait). also, apparently the safeway down the street from woodward IS open on sundays, though only til 7pm. so the poor virginians can come get their liquor, yay.

tomorrow, NYT and the post will both have it on the front page, though comrade wp will have it on the bottom left—prime real estate has to go to tom eagleton's mental health and, yes, the fucking london dockworker strike

what happened after is a semi familiar story—teddy kennedy holds hearings, there's a government whitewash report, someone burns tapes—better told in harriet washington's medical apartheid chapter 7, "'A Notoriously Syphilis-Soaked Race': What Really Happened at Tuskegee?"

since that book's publication, it has also come out that bill jenkins, epidemiologist and statistician at PHS who founded and edited a newsletter aimed at ending racial discrimination in HEW (Dept. of Health, Education, & Welfare, predecessor to HUD), tried to publicize the study and call for its end in 1968.
