Botox may be useful in helping cure athletes knee pain.
It is more commonly associated with getting rid of wrinkles on the face but Botox injections also have many uses in the medical field; researchers are now suggesting that the toxin can help runners and cyclists with associated knee pain – a condition that affects over one in eight people.
Scientists from Imperial College London and Fortius Clinic conducted a trial with 45 patients who were suffering with knee pain – known as lateral patellofemoral overload syndrome. A form of botulinum toxin known as Dysport was injected into the knees of the patients and over two-thirds of those taking part said that they had not pain at all five years later, and required no further medical treatment. Where conventional treatments appear to have failed, the toxin has proved to be extremely useful with treating the condition.
Co-author of the study, Doctor Jo Stephen, said that the athletes who took part in the trial had tried all other treatments with little results and saw Botox as their last resort, so the results were especially positive. Dr Stephen added that it could have ‘implications’ for millions of active people struggling with the condition around the world.
Co-author Sam Church, consultant knee surgeon from Fortius Clinic, called it a ‘really exciting step forward in the management of a very common cause of knee pain’. He went on to say that the results of the trials showed that ‘botulinum toxin can provide better and longer lasting pain relief than the current, conventional alternatives.’
