somewhere in africa a elephant takes a last broken gasp. it’s falling into the earth. it had become to old and slow to keep up with the herd. it was always seeing its loved ones from behind, like they were running away from it. before it’s vision went cold and black, it saw those it loved one last beautiful time. elephants are one of the only animals that mourn their dead is what i think to myself at 1 in the morning when i can’t sleep and the documentary on tv is droning on.
somewhere in africa is an older chimpanzee, not well enough to search for food anymore, going blind in one eye after a particular brutal fight for territory. this chimpanzee’s family have taken to taking care of him, his brother snaps the branches from the trees above them sticks them in the earth, hoping for the food that the termites would grant them. chimpanzees are the only animals that make tools is what i learn a hour later, still unable to sleep. still listening to the droning of the tv.
what i’m saying here is that i’ve been wonder if i would be loved enough for someone to break branches for me, and to stick them into the earth in search of termites for me. and what i’m saying, is that i wonder if anyone would slow down for the slow, dying thing that is my body. and if someone would have protected me from these violent things. and i
think of what happens when a whale can’t support its body anymore, how for a few moments there is a beautiful song that cries out “goodbye” and then only sinking
