Destiel AU, vol. 2 - Two People Love Triangle and Other Configurations. One of my all time favorite fanfic tropes is Two People Love Triangle - a classic set up where Dean and Cas get to know each other through some kind of anonymous communication and also meet in real life. It takes time to put both personas together while falling in love and lust with both. But which one they will chose? This trope has a wonderful character tension and potential for delicious reveals that I adore. 

Our Destiel AU rec lists are intended for first time recs (see here), but since this trope is hard to come by, I’m taking an opportunity to rec couple of new fics alongside older fics that are scattered through the blog, on our Anonymity/ Internet tag and some other tags.

2. Identity Porn. Two People Love Triangle is a part of much larger trope, Identity Porn, which is more popular in fandoms with superheros (see Fanlore definition) where you can get Lois Lane, Clark Kent and Superman tangle. Since Supernatural fandom doesn’t have canon material for Identity Porn stories, destiel fics are exploring secret identity angst in relationship in very creative ways that is sometimes very hard to categorize. Here’s some of my favorite fics with secret identities and delicious tension they bring to the story. As always, this is YMMV kinda rec.

College AU. Castiel comes across a Dr Sexy kink meme and every prompt he leaves gets filled almost immediately. Also, he has a not-so-secret crush on his roommate. You can see where this is going :) Probably half this fic is Dr Sexy fanfic, which I had a blast writing.

And, of course, Dean Winchester. Dean Winchester, local author and obvious a-hole, who is entirely too handsome to be true and who is clearly totally lacking in profundity, intelligence, sincerity, and self-awareness. Unfortunately, though, Dean’s been invited to do a book signing at Heaven’s Gate - and Castiel’s about to be confronted by some unexpected feelings when he finally meets Dean for the first time.

This little gem of a story packs a very hefty emotional punch despite its rather modest word count. It also has one of my favorite Cas voices - snarky, comfortable in his own skin, yet lacking those blasted people’s skills and unsure about his flirting game. Cas’ inner monologue about his everyday activities and preparations for an overrated popular writer’s visit to his library is priceless. So many lines made me laugh out loud, so many lines I want to quote. Then there’s lovely banter slash unexpected flirting with said writer. The cautious courtship dance takes Cas and Dean by surprise, and they both fail spectacularly. Cue sad books, heartbreak and me bawling my eyes out during their misunderstanding phase.

Another thing that makes this fic special is the direct yet unassuming way the story touches upon queer themes and topics. From Cas and Dean talking about their sexualities (ace spectrum and bisexual), to lovely queer characters, to talks about representation in books and real life. This fic radiates acceptance and positivity and truly is a comfort food and blanket all in one for everyone who needs it.Treat yourself!

The Dark Days Are Over

Most of the time Castiel just wanted it to end and he knew that a lot of the girls here felt the same way. Suicidal thoughts weren’t spoken openly but they all understood that everyone here wanted to die, especially ones like Castiel’s case who had been here for a few years now, three years, two months and twenty three days to be exact. He didn’t know why he still counted, it had begun as a kind of coping mechanism to keep him sane in the hopes that someone would find him but that hope had left him a long time ago. During the first year he had been mostly working truck stops and he’d move from truck to truck and be used as nothing more than something to warm their cocks for the night. He acted coyly of course, a little smile on his lips and a strut in his hips as he walked in his tight little shorts because he knew that they were watching, they always were and he had to play nice or even worse things would happen to him. He might want to die but he didn’t want to be killed, even he struggled with that concept. During that first year he made one escape attempt with another girl, it ended up with her being shot and he never tried again. He would hold that guilt with him for the rest of his life, survivors guilt he was pretty sure they called it and some nights he hated himself even more because he wished that maybe he could have changed places with her and been shot instead.  He’d been taken at eighteen years old, grabbed during the day from a rest stop on his way home from buying groceries, how fantastically mundane his life had been before that. He was one of the few boys he’d seen in the human sex trafficking ring since most peoples appetites were for woman but Castiel was in high demand as a delicacy and an attractive one at that. He’d never been allowed much exercise so even though puberty had hit him he still remained thin and desirably boyish to his customers. He stopped working the truck stops after his first year and was bought for a high price for a slight improvement. The front of the shop was a massage palour and while they did offer those services it’s main source of income was it’s escorts. By this point Castiel had stopped questioning his owners, he was obedient and he was good at his job, he serviced his customers and in return he would get a hit of the drug he’d become so fond of, a warm shower to wash himself before bed on a hard floor but a warm blanket and pillow in a small room with ten other sex workers. He didn’t speak to any of them, Castiel had become much colder over the years but he still felt a pang of remorse when he’d see the younger ones come and go. It was a day like any other, mid afternoon as he had walked in with his nicest kimono, the same colour of his eyes. It left little to the imagination even so with it being off one shoulder and bunched at his elbow it showed his plain skin, his collarbones and shoulder and it was short enough that if he bent over anyone would see the panties he was also wearing. He was asked to dress nice today, that he had a very high paying customer visit and it was their first time. First time customers always got the nicest treatment in order to wow them into coming back. Except the man sitting on one of the pillows in the Japanese styled room looked nothing like that type that came to a place like this and Castiel was intimately aware of all the types that came and went, at least he thought. “Hello Sir.” He greeted shortly in a gruff voice, holding a tray of teas and biscuits though Castiel wasn’t allowed to touch any of it himself unless expressed directly from the customer. He set down the tray with a gentle smile on his face and sat close to the handsome looking man who looked uncomfortable. Castiel was used to this with new customers so he tried his best to relieve their anxieties like a good worker. He pressed himself against his side and slid a hand over his shoulder and thigh, rubbing the skin. “Whats your name?” He asked pleasantly low against the other mans ear.
