It’s that time of year for enjoying Christmas stories. While I love vegging out to Hallmark movies with their unrealistic situations and family relationships, when I think about the Christmas stories I have loved, I’m always brought back to my favorites, A Christmas Carol by Dickens and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. Pros/Cons Quickie

Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly

Pros

Enjoyable characters. Isabelle’s struggle to understand herself in a world that doesn’t understand her is a beautiful message. Inspiring.

Familiar story. The story of Cinderella is inverted, with the focus on the stepsister’s struggles of being “ugly” in a world that prefers “pretty.”

Cons

Unconventional narrator. The story breaks out of the action on number of occasions with an inspirational message. This pulled me out of the story because it written in second person.
