aspects of a page turning & wholesome read
create avenues for mystery
surprise or mislead the reader at least twice (in any small way, not just huge plot twists)
have at least one major plot twist
the protagonist must have that One flaw/fear - and they're forced to face it
include one scene where everyone is confused/the characters think/expect a certain thing, while another occurs (misleading the reader also OR dramatic irony)
time limit/deadline - leading up to a day when all chaos will be unleashed; a date when the reader can expect a big event to occur (anticipation); a deadline on which all hope will be host if your characters fail
a "homepage" - a location that the characters fall back to/come home to; a memorable place dear to a character's heart
a location where The Final Standoff will take place - can be a physical battle or meeting. is a memorable place and already hinted at sometime previously during the novel.
some foreshadowing - words/sentences that mean one thing when reading the first time, but clicks in the reader's head later - "oh, that's why xe said that!"
RULES - of magic/powers, of government, of society
RELATIONSHIPS - good/bad; at least ONE relationship that the reader should care for deeply
DARKEST HOUR - where everything is lost, everything they fought for was for nothing; no hope at all - this should motivate a change in the character's thinking/personality & make them consider what they haven't before
at least three major events that drive plot forward; could be clues to a mystery; a fight; or a new character introduction
introduce the main character doing something specific to them
CONFLICT - one character's goal must clash with another
an inside joke that is shared between two characters (and the reader!)
these are just guidelines and i don't mean that you are obliged to include these in your stories or else its a bad story. i just hope this inspires someone out there. happy writing!
