The word "generator", in recent times, has developed a nasty connotation with the infestation that is generative AI. It also pollutes search results when searching for writing tools. Reject slop. Embrace human made generators.

PLOT GENERATORS

MASTERPIECE GENERATOR - This is the one the majority of us probably already know of. With it you can generate a whole number of types of plot, as well as characters, song lyrics, and a lot more.

REEDSY PLOT GENERATOR - Reedsy is an excellent tool for writers. On top of providing a plot generator, they also have a manuscript writing tool AND they email their users weekly writing prompts!

WRITING EXERCISES PLOT GENERATOR - This is a simple yet effective tool for generating quick ideas if you find yourself stuck. Alongside a plot generator, they also have character and name generators, as well as a nice range of tools to help you develop your writing.

CHAOTIC SHINY - This is a SUPER tool. Focused on writing and RPGs, Chaotic Shiny likely has everything your heart could desire. Not only can you generate plots, there's also a plethora of generators for characters, places, names, and much, much more.

RANGEN - Another large tool with a lot more beyond just plot generation. You can find generators for worlds, characters, names, and a lot of others. It's particularly good for TTRPG players.

SEVENTH SANCTUM - This one's got a ton of different writing generators like quick plots, plot twists, and even what-ifs. But it's also got a hell of a lot more generators for pretty much all your needs.

MAGATSU GENERATOR CENTRAL - This website has a decent range of plot generators, art prompts, and title generators. You also have the option to commission the creator for a book cover!

TV TROPES - A pretty simple tool that gives you a bunch of story elements including narrative device, setting, hero, villain, and a bit more.

DONJON - SO many generators on this site. Most of them are tailored to DnD (as you'd expect from an RPG tool site), but there are a lot that can be used in writing as well.

NAME GENERATORS

SERENDIPITY - This one's still being rebuilt after an attack on the old site, so it's quite limited. But on it you can find French, Fantasy, Japanese, and Medieval name generators.

BEHIND THE NAME - A really thorough name generator. You can narrow it down to country of origin, gender, and more.

FANTASY NAME GENERATORS - Does exactly what it says on the tin, and more. With over 1400 types of name generators (including fandom specific ones!), you're bound to find what you're looking for. The site also plants trees!

REEDSY - They've got plenty of name generators which also narrow down by place of origin, fantasy type, medieval, archetype, and some more.

CHARACTER GENERATORS

SPRINGHOLE - This site has a variety of character generators, as well as backstory generators for your new characters. They've also got plot and worldbuilding generators, and much more!

CHARACTER TRAIT GENERATOR - Powered by Tumblr. This tool allows you to randomise a set of two traits, a skill, a quirk, a hobby, and a main personal struggle.

SHORT STORY IDEAS - A simple website where you can generate a first and last name for your character, alongside a description and personality. They've also got generators for titles, first lines, storylines, and twists!

52 PROMPTS - It's pretty simplistic when it comes to characters, but I do recommend taking a look at their generator masterlist for a few other generator options.

CHARACTER HUB - It's got a few generators for characters, including a pretty cool trauma generator for those of you who love to put your characters through terrible situations. It's more useful for gathering inspiration and resources for character creation. They've got A LOT of resources!

20 QUESTIONS - Another very simple tool where it gives you 20 questions regarding your character which you can fill out. It's less of a generator and more of a prompt tool, but still pretty cool.

WORLD/SETTING

SMALLTOWN NAME GEN - A simple, funny little generator that does exactly what you'd expect; gives you the name of a small town, and even the population size!

AZGAAR'S FANTASY MAP - Exactly what it says. The site will give you options to edit once the map has been generated.

WATABOU - A nice collection of location generators, including things like cities, villages, and neighbourhoods.

EIGENGRAU - It's a pretty simple generator for setting up the bare bones of your location.

CITY GENERATOR - Procedurally generates a city map (based on American city layouts). There's plenty of instructions on how to get the most out of this tool on the page.

IMAGINEFOREST - Quite a simple tool, gives you a list of place names that you can randomise until you've got something you're happy with.

RANDOM/OTHER

VULGARLANG - A very extensive and useful generator for creating fantasy languages. Not only does it generate, it also gives a whole lot of information on how to craft a language yourself.

anyways, everyone should know about KodyTools.

it's a website with a collection of online tools; everything from math, finance, writing/text, science, coding, date/time, et cetera. and not just one or two for each category either! there are over 200 tools on this website. it's just absolutely fantastic; it's also an easy website to navigate + it's really simple to use all the tools! they also explain each one~

also it's free + there is only one singular ad, as far as i can tell, just the single banner at the top of the page. so you won't have to deal with annoying ad pop ups constantly.

i actually found it because of their text tools, specifically their combination generator + their sort lines generator (it's actually how i got all the combinations for my TF picker wheel)! i also recently found their empty lines remover which has been a lifesaver~

You can do pretty much anything you want to do! However, I know how difficult all those choices can be, so here’s some generators I use to get the creative juices flowing!

Seventh Sanctum Character Generators - there’s a bunch to choose from and some of the generated results can get REALLY out there, but sometimes that may be what you need!

Chaotic Shiny Fantasy Character Generator - a bit less out there, but it does give you some character traits, names and other things that may help too!

Springhole Character Generators -another one to try!

Another thing I use was actually made to be an artist’s tool (I use it for that too, but I’ve found it handy in my writing as well). It costs money, but Jazza’s Arty Games app has a couple of character specific generators that could be fun if you have $3 lying around. Again, some of the suggestions can get WILD, but even if you don’t use them for a story, they can be good for a laugh or a creative exercise. Available on PC/iOS/Android. #notspons I just like Jazza and he’s a rad artist and dude.
