Damian's presence is something of a ghost story in the abbey—a topic occasionally whispered among the young nuns. Sometimes, his overly passionate prayers to the Light or the clanging of old instruments of punishment would drift into the ears of sisters busy with their cleaning.
If the superiors of the abbey remained silent about the punishments for a nun's transgressions, then whenever a bruised and battered sister returned from the secret penance hall, rumors would spread: “Those who disobey the Light will be punished by Damian.”
