Don't be ashamed to write clichés! They're popular for a reason.

Some tropes and clichés are badly written in stories, but that might have nothing to do with the trope itself, but with the fact that the author's style and choices didn't do it justice.

If you find that one of your stories fits into a cliché, don't scratch it or try to change important parts of it just to make it stand out, your story will naturally stand out because it's yours, so if it just so happens to be a cliché that's completely okay!

Bodies of Water

Let’s face it, there’s a lot of words for different bodies of water. Lakes, reefs, gulfs, all that jazz. Someone should clear up the differences! There’s a post on Paths similar to this.

So, here's a totally not comprehensive guide to

Bodies of Water

backwater: water held or forced back, as by a dam, flood, or tide

bayou: any of various other often boggy, sluggish, stagnant, slow-moving or still bodies of water

bay: a body of water forming an indentation of the shoreline, larger than a cove but smaller than a gulf

brook: a small, natural stream of water

canal: a long narrow arm of the sea penetrating far inland

channel: a length of water wider than a strait, joining two larger areas of water

creek: a stream smaller than a river, sometimes in a marsh

cove: a small indentation in the shoreline of a sea

estuary: that part of the mouth or lower course of a river in which the river's current meets the sea's tide

fjord: a long, narrow arm of the sea bordered by steep cliffs: usually formed by glacial erosion

gorge: a chasm, especially one through which a stream runs

gulf: a portion of an ocean or sea partly enclosed by land

inlet: an indentation of a shoreline, usually long and narrow

lagoon: an area of shallow water separated from the sea by low sandy dunes

lake: a body of fresh or saltwater of considerable size, surrounded by land

pond: a body of water smaller than a lake

ria: a long, narrow inlet of a river that gradually decreases in depth from mouth to head

rill: between a rivulet and brook

river: a natural stream of water of fairly large size flowing in a definite course

rivulet: between a river and a stream

run: located near a stream or other small body of water

runnel: a small brook

spring: a natural pool or stream of water coming up from the earth

sound: a narrow stretch of water forming connecting two wider areas of water that are not the same

strait: a narrow passage of water connecting two other large areas of water

stream: a body of water flowing in a channel or watercourse

sump: a pit, well, or the like in which water or other liquid is collected

torrent: a stream of water flowing with great rapidity and violence

whirlpool: water in swift, circular motion, as that produced by the meeting of opposing currents, often causing a downward spiralling action

As I said last time, I’m sure there’s a couple of words I missed here and there, but these are the majority of words you will need. Happy writing!

Something to remember about writing: When it feels like it sucks, it probably doesn't, at least not as much as you think it does. Just step away for a while and then come back to it later.

Worldbuilding Reminder

Okay, so remember how when you worldbuild, you only introduce that which is relevant to the story at that given point? To avoid info-dumping?

You introduce each section and aspect of that world bit by bit, as the characters traverse it or learn about it in some way that isn’t info-dumping. 

The Chronicles of Narnia is amazing at worldbuilding. You only learn a little bit about it at a time, and essentially everything you learn is relevant when you learn it. Perfection. *chef’s kiss*

Anyway. 

Keeping that in mind, I want to remind people that it’s okay to write a smaller-scale fantasy world and only introduce what is relevant when it’s necessary. 

My world is pretty small. Only one or two kingdoms that you ever learn about, and the histories don’t get burrowed into very deeply. 

All I’m saying is that smaller-scale fantasy worlds are just as great as bigger, more “epic” worlds. Write the world you want and the one that works for your story :)))

Have fun designing your world. You can be a creative or cliché as you want if you execute the world well.

There are always silent readers. People who never say a word but love it when you’re updating your story. People who screenshot your work, people who find your work to be the highlight of their week, people who revisit your work time and time again.

Writing Reminder

Rules: There are none.

I didn't feel like this qualified as a tip since most writers already know this, but it remains a valid subject to rememer - there are no rules you have to follow in creative writing! Prose comes in many forms, there's no reason to use the same format on a story, a poem, a piece of writing that's completely yours and completely free, that you would on an MLA essay. This includes everything...

- If you want, go!!! nuts!!! on!!! the!!! punctuation!!!! Definitely not in a manner that is disctracting to the reader, but if you feel like making the worlds longest sentence, held together by a million commas and sheer willpower? Go for it!

- Make up words! (a personal favorite of mine). Is the word Yeckter in the dictionary? Heck no, but I bet you already have an idea what it could maybe represent in your head.

- Make words in a paragraph rhyme! Combining poetry and speech? Why not? It can add a nice beat to the scene and elicit feelings the reader didn't expect.

- Mess around with the page format. Include chapter titles, paragraph titles, times of the day, asterics, anything you want! Utilizing anything you desire to inject background and structure into a scene/setting can not only help a reader's understanding, but be pretty hilarious to read!

- Sentence. Fragments. Are. Okay. Make a sentence as short as you want. Even shorter. As humans, we don't talk or think in complete sentences, so why should we, as writers, be forced to write in them? Mix it up a little!

There are so many more ways to break the rules, to test the boundaries of what you can and can't do as a writer (spoiler alert: anything you want), but these are just a couple ideas to help get you started. And until next time...
