It was only a few minutes since James and Angel arrived at the cocktail party, Angel wore a beige suit, more colorful than anything he’d ever had on at a fancy gathering like this.
James wore a lava light blue suit that complimented his eyes, he also had on a well tailored waistcoat that hugged his waist nicely.
Angel held a Strawberry Margarita that he was yet to take a sip of, he was feeling particularly tense because James hadn’t come here or invited him for no reason, James had his sights set on his father, who stood greeting people across the room.
“Babe, maybe we should go sit somewhere,” Angel leaned in and whispered, “Standing here and staring won’t do anything.”
“You’re right.” James stated.
Without another word, he began making his way towards his father and his boytoy, Angel felt bad using that term to describe him. Mateo was a young actor, clearly lacking the emotional intelligence to realise what he was getting himself into.
Mr. Willow, never a fan of light colors, wore a warm-toned dark green suit, almost the same color as his eyes. Mateo, on the other hand, wore a sky blue suit and a dark blue tie, both plain, contrasting the actor’s eccentric personality.
Mateo gleamed at the sight of them, he practically jumped at Angel, grabbing his hand in both of his and excitedly shaking it.
“Angel!” he exclaimed, “Leo said you two weren’t coming, why the sudden change of heart? Did you find out who was performing today?” he pulled Angel closer with surprising strength, “Me! I’m performing! I’ve talked to the band here and everything, gosh, isn’t this the best thing ever!? And we get to wear light colors too! I was getting so sick of the navy blues, I mean it’s just so- god, I’ve been talking too much, haven’t I?”
Something about Mateo had changed, and not in a good way. His relationship with Leonardo seemed to only make him more insecure than he already was, Angel still recalled their conversation in the dining room, Mateo was too innocent for his own good, he was a deer spending time with a lion.
Angel recently learned that lions ate their own children when they were too weak, and that in his mind was a perfect metaphor for how Leonardo behaved.
“Dad.” James stated, he simply glanced at Mateo, before looking back up at his father, “Giving your pet a longer leash?”
Leonardo clenched his jaw and smiled, “I’m only following your footsteps, son.”
“I wasn’t a pervert, last time I checked.”
“I wasn’t one either.” Leonardo stated, “I see you enough around the house, why don’t you go socialize with others?”
“Do you really?” James asked, glaring, “What am I majoring in, then? Surely if you run into me so frequently, you’d know what I want to be when I grow up.”
Leonardo’s smile dropped, his expression becoming more frustrated.
“You don’t choose what you want to be, you were already born into greatness,”
“Greatness,” James nodded, “Is that why you’re dating a gigolo who’s half your age? Because you’re so great?”
Mateo tilted his head, “What’s a gigolo?”
The question only earned him a sharp glance from Leonardo, before he returned to the heated conversation with his son.
Mateo then looked at Angel for an answer, but Angel just smiled, not having the heart to tell him.
“Don’t worry about it,” Angel whispered, pulling Mateo away from the two, “You look great today, man.”
“Enough,” Leonardo growled, “What I do with my personal affairs is none of your concern.”
“And my affairs are all of yours?” James demanded, struggling to keep quiet, “How’s that fair?”
“I am your father.” Leonardo stated.
“Are you? Judging by your taste in men, you’re more likely to be my brother.” he snapped back.
“James, I have sacrificed more than you could possibly comprehend for this family’s reputation. Your mother chose to leave me, and how I choose to entertain myself is frankly none of your business.”
“Did you sacrifice anything, or did your brothers do most of the heavy lifting?" James demanded.
Leonardo then made an expression that didn’t suit his face at all, it wasn’t an expression Angel thought he could make. His eyes widened and his lips parted, much unlike the demeanor he usually put out. For some moments, despite his wrinkles and the streaks of blond in his hair, Leonardo resembled a little boy.
And just like a little boy handled conflict, Leonardo adjusted his blazer, and excused himself, before rushing away.
James turned to face Angel and Mateo, he stepped closer and pushed Mateo away.
“Don’t you wanna go after him? Maybe he’ll drop some money for you to pick up on the way.” he spat.
Mateo looked more confused than hurt, his usual expression of puzzlement remained, and all he managed to let out in response was a small, “Huh?”
Then he looked at Angel, stepping closer to him again, “What just happened?”
Angel smiled, he seemed to be the only person in the world who had enough patience for Mateo’s never-ending questions.
“James and Mr. Willow just had a bit of a falling out, it happens.” he explained.
“It doesn’t,” James instantly shot back, his harsh gaze remained on Mateo, “Except for when a fatuous poof steps between us, then things get heated.”
Mateo’s mouth hung open, and he looked at Angel waiting for an explanation, Angel lightly bit his lower lip and looked at James.
“Babe, it’s not his fault.” he muttered, “I’m proud of you, but he’s being taken advantage of-”
James scoffed, “That innocence is an act, clearly you haven’t heard of what he does behind closed doors.” he looked again at Mateo, “Would you like to share what age you lost your virginity, just to paint a clear picture for my boyfriend?”
Mateo’s cheeks flushed, almost his entire face turned pink, and he looked from Angel to James, eyes not settling on either one of them.
“I should go get ready to get on stage-” Mateo quickly said.
“How much head did you have to give to earn that opportunity?” James asked, “Was it the entire band, or just their leader?”
Mateo quickly marched away, keeping his head down and his fists clenched.
Angel lightly caressed James’s face, “That was cool how you stood up for your dad,” he said with a smile, “I’m proud of you. You wanna talk about it?”
“I’m feeling really, um, energetic right now.” James said, “The adrenaline. The last thing I wanna do with you right now is talk.”
Angel smirked, “Of course, are there any bathrooms here?”
“Restroom? What do you think I am?” he asked, exaggerating his shock, “I know how the human brain works, I booked a hotel room for us in advance, it’s not too far from here.”
James grabbed Angel’s hand, “Let’s go.”
The two went past the bar where Mateo was standing, staring out the window and watching Leonardo’s car drive away. He sighed and rested his chin on his palm.
He eyed the cocktails with a small pout on his face, he was here already, why not drink and numb the sadness bubbling up inside of him?
He felt a presence near him, a man who placed a hand on his waist and pulled Mateo closer. Mateo flinched at the sudden contact, resisting the urge to shove him away.
Mateo looked him up and down, then smiled, “Hi?”
“A pretty boy like you shouldn’t look this upset at a party, how can I make you feel better?” the man asked, caressing Mateo’s side.
“Hm..” Mateo looked at the bar, “Help me pick which cocktail to drink- oh! And buy it for me, of course, that’ll bring a smile to my face.”
“More gorgeous than the one you already have?”
“Depends on how many cocktails you buy me,” Mateo replied, lightly biting his lower lip, “The more you buy, the happier I get.”
“What’s your name, doll?”
Then the man said his name, introducing himself with a handshake as if he wasn’t already gripping onto Mateo’s side. He had a long last name that sounded like it came from wealth, Mateo didn’t care to remember it, he never was really good at remembering names.
People didn’t care though, no one ever cared about his manners, all everyone ever cared about was how much they could touch, and how well he could disguise his discomfort.
