How to write lovesickness

This post was going to be about motivations, but I’m not feeling too well, so here are some symptoms of lovesickness:

Insomnia. This is a guarantee for lovesick characters - the oxytocin our brains produce when we’re in love makes us feel good around our partners, but can also cause us to lose sleep.

Loss of appetite. Remember that oxytocin? It can also result in loss of appetite. 

Inability to concentrate. The same chemical, oxytocin, can also result in this symptom. The character’s head might be overwhelmed with thoughts of their love, negative or positive, with hopes of requited love or longing to be near them.

Heart palpitations. This usually happens in limerence, or, the state of being obsessed or infatuated with another person. 

Stomach pains. This also happens in limerence, as does...

Shortness of breath and...

Depression. Limerence can cause situational depression if the other person’s love is unrequited. 

These symptoms are usually gone in 6 to 24 months, so give your character(s) time to heal! :-) My inbox is always open.
