Childhood Obesity and Mental Health

Not only can an unhealthy diet affect a child’s physical health, but their mental health as well.

An unhealthy diet often leads to weight gain which can lead to childhood obesity. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this, in our society there is a social stigma towards people who are overweight. They tend to be looked-down upon and treated poorly by others just for being overweight.

Our society puts a lot of pressure on adults as well as children to be skinny and good looking, regardless if you’re healthy or not. If you aren’t skinny, you can be exiled from peer groups and seen as a social leper.

Not only can peers treat obese children poorly, but their family can as well. Individuals who suffered from childhood obesity often report instances where their parents would treat them differently than their thinner siblings, putting them on unfair diets and forcing exercise on them - punishing them for sneaking chocolate or candy. Being treated this way not only by friends but family as well makes a kid feel alone; it cuts deep and the feelings generated by these experiences can last a lifetime.

This can lead to a sense of worthlessness , poor self-esteem, and a small or non-existent social circle. This in turn can lead to depression, and in kids, a downturn in grades and academic success.

These developments often get carried into adulthood. It can make you feel unwanted, unworthy, and helpless. Even if you do manage to reach an “acceptable” weight by society’s standards, you may forever see yourself as the fat kid you once were.

You may see yourself as unworthy of healthy relationships as you were often denied friends and partners as a child.

While there is no instant fix to childhood obesity, and definitely no way to instantly change the way society sees overweight people, you can always strive to be your best self.

Whether that means accepting yourself for the way you are, refusing to change anything because you see yourself as perfect the way you are. Or, that means striving to become healthier physically, which can lead to a healthier mental state.

The way society and their peers treat obese children isn’t fair and certainly isn’t right, but it’s hard to change people’s minds. Teaching kids to eat healthy and to see themselves as beings worthy of love is an excellent way to combat this.

Eating poorly can greatly influence the way you feel. Not only physically, but mentally as well. Switching up what you eat to something healthier has been known to better your mental health.

When we eat more saturated fats and less nutrient-rich foods, we invite an army into our bodies that diminishes a protein in the brain called neurotrophin which are directly related to a healthy, happy, growing brain. Not only does this protein help our brain grow, but it can also affect how our brain deals with stress. 

While it can be hard to switch to a new diet while you’re feeling down, it is always beneficial to at least try and sneak some healthy foods in there. Instead of chips, try baby carrots or grapes. If you’re looking for something sweet, berries and other fruits are always a good alternative. Even a simple switch can help you on the road to improved mental health. If you do begin to feel more up to it, try switching more of your food. Include more whole grains, lean red meat and fish, as well as more veggies and healthy fruits.  

Not only will this help your mental health, but your physical health as well. A lot of times, mental health and physical health are closely related. The way you look on the outsides can greatly affect the way you feel on the inside, especially your self-esteem. If you begin to eat healthy, it can start a cycle of improved physical health that leads to improved mental health which then leads back into improved physical health. If you feel good about your body, you will feel better about yourself as a whole, if you feel better about yourself you’ll want to reflect that on the outside. 

It may be hard to switch immediately, and that is why I recommend to do it slowly; sneak some healthy foods in every now and then and eventually you’ll do it automatically without having to think about it. You must also keep in mind that weight loss and improved mental health are the similar in that they won’t happen overnight. Both of these changes take time and patience, something that we humans unfortunately never have.  

Just remember that these things take time, but they can get better and you always have the ability to better yourself as a person. You just need to be persistent and to find something that keeps you moving forward.

One of my favorite things about horror as a genre is the fact that it reflects a particular culture’s idea of what is ‘scary.’ This is especially true in the case of Japanese horror anime. Elements such as animation, plot, cinematography, and even music are used to scare viewers or at least keep them on the edge of their seats. But these elements need to have a particular theme to use as a base. Based on the animes I’ve watched and manga I’ve read, Japanese horror is centered on specific themes that are no doubt caused by cultural influence.

To celebrate the Halloween season, this blog post is dedicated to discussing the three most popular themes in horror anime that I’ve found as well as their roots in Japanese culture.

 The Supernatural/Paranormal

The presence of ghosts and other supernatural beings are common not only in Japanese anime and manga, but in movies as well. Shiki and Another are excellent examples of horror anime that feature the supernatural. However, this theme is also common among non-horror themed anime like Ano Hana and even Clannad that feature characters who are ghosts.

The supernatural isn’t just found in Japanese horror anime but throughout the country’s history as well in the form of ghost stories that have been around for generations. One of the reasons why this is popular in the culture itself is due to Japan’s main belief system: Shintoism. I’m not an expert on this but I do know that it’s a polytheistic religion that believes in the presence of spirits. Superstition is also common as well and there are people who know not to take this lightly. Therefore, it isn’t a surprise that it found its way into anime as well.

In Japanese culture, there are both benign and malevolent spirits, and it’s the latter one that people know to look out for. These supernatural beings are also seen to have their own powers as well, enough to cause harm to other people. The idea of having to encounter these malevolent supernatural beings are what’s usually depicted as ‘scary.’

 Curses

This basically falls under the whole supernatural theme but I decided to keep it separate since the act of cursing or being cursed is usually used as a theme in itself as well. Japanese ‘curses’ have links to the supernatural as well and are seen as evil. Curses are usually used to bring harm to a particular person and examples of animes that have this particular theme are Jigoku Shoujo and even Another as well.

Although I specified this as a theme, it is probably more appropriate to classify ‘curses’ as a symbol as well when it comes to Japanese anime and manga. Curses are usually irreversible which can symbolize the inevitability of a particular event to happen. In animes, people are usually depicted placing a curse on someone else in an act of vengeance. So, in a way, curses can also symbolize revenge or a cruel and harsh kind of justice.

 Murder

This theme does not fall within the supernatural theme umbrella but instead, it’s a more ‘realistic’ kind of horror since it happens every day in real life. The threat of being killed or murdered is a very real fear that happens every day. But what’s interesting is how Japanese anime manages to combine it with other genres and incorporate the element of plot into it to make it much scarier. Its most commonly found paired up with the theme of mystery but I personally enjoy murder-themed animes that have the supernatural theme as well.

What’s interesting about the theme of murder is the fact that it’s a more ‘modern’ kind of horror. As I said in the start of the review, horror is closely related to culture since it reflects ideas of what’s ‘scary.’ The themes ‘supernatural’ and ‘curses’ are much older and stem from superstitious beliefs that are part of Japanese culture. The theme of ‘murder,’ on the other hand, is more in line with the current reality that people face rather than their beliefs and culture.
