You make me go there, even though I don’t like to. Liked you simply, easily, and I would never spite you. You put other people on my brain. Inspire my haikus. Unlike you, I need a mode of expression. Unlike you, I can’t resort to passive aggression. Which by the way, is a massive deception, because I know you feel something. Not in a kidding myself kinda way, but in the way that I know you’re carrying something. I know you’re not that way for nothing.

skin  around  her  nails  bitten  tender,  nikki  breathes  out.  an  attempt  to  try  and  steady  herself,  calm  her  mind  and  her  heart.  she  hates  this,  hates  how  it  has  come  to  this.  hates  how  whenever  something  minor  happened,  it  impacted  everyone  around  her.  even  someone  like  scott,  someone  she  valued  so  deeply.  guilt  creeps  up  to  her  and  intensifies  with  every  time  her  eyes  flick  over  scott's  message.  again,  and  again,  and  again.  nikki  starts  typing  but  keeps  erasing  every  message  she  starts,  until  she  finally  finds  words  that  don't  sound  totally  off.

       she  doesn’t  exactly  know  what  she’s  looking  for  when  she  first  steps  into  the  car  shop.  all  she  does  know  is  that  something’s  wrong  with  her  car  and  that  she  needs  to  fix  it.  not  having  much  money  to  spend,  she  originally  didn’t  even  want  to  go  to  the  car  shop.  however,  with  how  her  car  has  been  sounding  every  time  she  so  much  as  started  the  car,  she  doesn’t  think  she  has  any  other  choice. 

       which  is  why,  now,  she  finds  herself  in  this  shop.  the  smell  of  sharp  petroleum,  motor  oil,  and  metallic  dust  is  lingering  in  the  air  as  a  guy  approaches  her.  nikki's  head  whips  around,  as  though  she’s  been  caught  red  handed.  she  parts  lips  at  his  question,  not  knowing  whether  he  is  asking  her  because  he  works  there  or  because  he  is  genuinely  concerned  for  her  wellbeing.  wouldn’t  be  the  first  time  someone  asks  her  if  she  was  okay  because  of  an  uncontrollably  derailed  facial  expression  done  on  accident.  judging  from  his  attire,  however,  she  suspects  it’s  the  former  and  he  simply  wants  to  help  a  customer.

       ❝  um,  ❞  she  starts,  looking  back  at  the  selection  of  what  she  thinks  could  be  something  useful  but,  in  all  honesty,  isn’t  entirely  sure.  she  lets  out  a  nervous  chuckle.  ❝  my  car’s  been  acting  up  and  honestly,  i  don’t  really  know  what’s  wrong  with  it.  i  thought  i’d  find  the  answer  once  i  step  in  here,  but   …   well.  i  feel  like  my  efforts  are  in  vain.  ❞

he couldn’t hide his immediate irritation at the other’s comment, face turning to his famous frown as fingers pinched the bridge of his nose. what the hell is this guy’s problem ? scott looked up, brows still furrowed. “ what do you mean by that ? ”

laying awake in the dark, the text coming in is a welcome distraction from her ever spinning thoughts. nikki grabs her phone as the second message comes in. she can’t help but roll her eyes a little as she replies.

[  txt  :  zack ] : actually [  txt  :  zack ] : your texts just woke me up [  txt  :  zack ] : anything i can help you with, or? 

despite the bite in her snide question, she smiles as she sends the messages back to zack.

her  phone  lights  up  next  to  her,  the  room  momentarily  glowing  in  a  bluish  light.  it’s  the  middle  of  the  night  and  she  can’t  sleep. again.  something  she  has  slowly  gotten  used  to  over  time.  nikki  rolls  over  to  the  side  to  see  who  messages  her  at  three  in  the  morning.  somehow,  she  isn't  surprised  to  see  bianca's  contact  popping  up.  nikki  simply  stares  at  the  text  for  some  time  before  rubbing  at  her  temple,  sighing  into  the  darkness.

scott fought the urge to repeat the sentence back to her. he slightly leaned forward, ruby quarts shades blocking others’ view of his eyes. the name on on the tip of his tongue. he just couldn’t think with all of the noise and cigarette smoke surrounding him. scott hated the bar most of the time. “ um… ” he paused as eyes locked onto the mole near her eye. “ nikki freeman ? ”
