“On the Bubble” - Al Boyd from Wrong Way Records

Greetings Al! So this is the first “On the Bubble” that is outside the normal, band/musician. Part of the plan for me here at Float Inside a Bubble is to keep it broad, and get people introduced to ALL aspects of music. So, it’s an honor to have you aboard to talk to us about your new(ish) label, Wrong Way Records. So, can you please tell us about the label a bit. When you started up, why, where, etc etc.

Thank you Nathan and it’s a pleasure. I’ve always dreamed of setting up a label, ever since I was fascinated by them in my early teens. I loved buying records on certain labels, and still do. I just love getting as many releases on a favourite label as I can. I just love the way labels like Factory, Creation, 4AD, and in more recent times, Fuzz Club and Sonic Cathedral have created their own unique identity. So last year I decided to take the plunge, with a lot of encouragement from friends. It seems so much easier to start a DIY label these days, and with the resurgence in vinyl it seemed a logical thing to do. We are based on the picturesque North Coast of Cornwall in the UK. Not an ideal location for a label, but I don’t think location matters any more. With social media and the internet, I think you can set up anywhere where there is an internet connection, although ours could be a bit quicker.

Your first release was Rancho Relaxo (which I reviewed here a couple months back). How did that come about?

I’d been a big fan of Rancho Relaxo for a long time, and they had a string of amazing releases behind them, but nothing on vinyl, to my dismay. So I tenderly and nervously approached the band, to find they were already in the process of releasing “White Light Fever” on vinyl. But after a long conversation, we agreed that I would take over the release, being UK based the distribution would be cheaper and easier. I was so pleased, they are a great bunch, and it’s been a pleasure working with them. I think it’s their best release to date; they just seem to get better and better. Just wait until you hear their next one.

You’ve had one other release so far, a split with 93millionmilestothesun and Presents for Sally. You have a couple more coming up here. Can you tell us what more you have coming in the next few months?

The next release is an amazing album by The Cult of Free Love called “Love Revolution”. I fell in love with their 10” release last year, and was so happy they were up for releasing the album on Wrong Way. We’ve also come up with some amazing packaging to, the whole thing is a work of art.

There are several others in the pipeline too, but I can reveal we are releasing three 7”s by UK bands; Meurtos, Glider and Is Bliss, as well as two 10”s by Edinburgh’s The Valkarys and a new one from Rancho Relaxo. Plus albums by Minneapolis’s Dead Gurus (Jason Edmonds), Normandy’s The Junkyard Liberty (which I heard for the first time yesterday, oh man is it good) and Chile’s Trementina. Plus a couple more that we are in negotiations with. The next 6 months are going to be pretty hectic. Plus lots of gigs and tours.

This is something you’ve always wanted to do, how does it feel to make a dream come true?

Ha, it feels good, but quite scary at times. I’m meeting such a great group of people and I’m honoured to be helping them. I set the label up to help bands. I’ve always liked labels where it seems to be a collective, and that is the ethos I’m trying to achieve. It’s a steep learning curve, but I’m enjoying every moment.

So if a band were to want to be released on Wrong Way Records, how do they go about doing that?

Contact us, we are always open to listen to new music, I will always find time for that, there is nothing better than hearing a new release or some demos for the first time, just leave a message on our home page. I will always give something a listen, but I can’t make any promises, but I’m always willing to give any help and support I can.

Now I just want to leave some space to allow you to ramble a bit about anything music related...whether it’s the scene, a band you really love, your passions, etc. Feel free to take as much space as you’d like. We just want to know more about you!

I think we are living in exciting times at the moment, music wise, there is so much great music out there and it seems to keep coming and coming, and the really exciting thing about it for me is it’s happening all over the world, or at least the web allows us access to bands and music we would never have heard of. This really excites me, but the downside is it’s so hard for bands to make it today, to earn a living from what they do. Which really does dishearten me. The psychedelic scene is bigger now than it’s been since the 60’s, but bands are still struggling to fill venues and sell records in quantities. There are some great labels out there who are doing a sterling job, but it seems so difficult to take that next step up.

Music at the top of the chain is now so controlled, bland and stagnant; it’s so hard to get your voice heard, as there is so much noise out there. Alas there are no mainstream radio shows or TV music shows left championing underground music. Even Record Store Day has been stifled by the major labels.

I just hope one day, somehow this will change and all good music will eventually rise to the top. I just hope it happens sooner rather than later, before the current revolution fizzles out. We are certainly going to try and help. It really does seem like the least I can do, to pay back all the pleasure music has given me over the years. Plus blogs like this are so important to get that message across, so thank you Nathan for your time, it’s been fun.
