Couple few weeks ago @misterryanadams declared this “a Tuesday album,” so here I am back on the elliptical after vacation going through all four sides. Best Dylan album by someone not-Dylan, which is a lot of people. Starts with a Subterranean-Homesick-style exciting jangle but then Ryan Adams’ songwriting gifts kick in on the bridge-coda thing of “To be young etc” and it goes all pretty and yearns in a different direction. Then Ryan manages three A-plus-plus songs in a row, Winding Wheel, Amy, (flip to the 2nd side), Oh My Sweet Carolina. He may never top that seemingly tossed off feat. Those three, totally Ryan Adams style, not Dylanesque, just so expertly lovely. Then a bunch of enjoyable songs that vary in their I-just-was-listening-to-Blonde-on-Blondeness. Main difference is there’s something in Ryan’s voice that makes everything seem actual and heartfelt and weary but always pretty and a little wistful. That’s how he got by with that album of Taylor Swift songs two or three or four years ago. He’s blessed by being able to sound like he means it. Just a great rock / alt-whatever singer. My son and his friend and his friend’s Dad and me drove to Pittsburgh a couple summers ago to see Noel Gallagher and got a Ryan Adams show (sort of “instead...” Noel opened for him—we didn’t realize they traded back and forth and my son is a huge Oasis/Noel fan; but Ryan had so much fun and did so much good stuff including Wonderwall it was still a great show). I still like this album of Ryan’s best, though. It makes me want to write some songs and make an album. I wish I could sing. #ryanadams #heartbreaker #amy #windingwheel #ohmysweetcarolina #damnsamiloveawomanthatrains #dylanesque #tuesdayalbum #vinyl #vinylcollection #treadmillsoundtrack #ellipticalsoundtrack #wrotetoomuch (at Noblesville, Indiana)
