SOLID X PLAQUEBOYMAX
Solid live on twitch with plaqueboymax while TRON records
On September 11, 2024, TIMM ELLIOTT FROM LYFE N TYMES released an interview with WTM SOLID, diving into his backstory and the journey that brought him to where he is today.
• Grew Up : Grew up on the North end of Michigan then moved to the West side towards going into highschool
• How was growing up in detroit? : Enjoyed growing up in detroit. Solid was more of an observer while growing up, it taught him how to move around.
• Where did the music start? Where did it come from? : When Solid was a kid, he loved how words could rhyme and how people used them to express themselves. At church, people would give him a few dollars just to hear him freestyle. He even wrote raps on flip phones. He never thought he’d become an artist, he just really loved music.
• Where did WRLDTOUR come from? : WRLDTOUR didn’t start off with music, everyone was already family. They had a groupchat that was originally SLAMASLUTRECORDS, then eventually turned to WRLDTOURMAFIA around 2016-2017. The members in the chat were solid: Rafa, Miles, Re, Scoob, Daemoney, and Amex. They all made each other better, being around that positive love and confidence is what kept things going. They felt like they were their own competition and never really paid attention to anyone else.
• Tim mentions how WTM stands out as an alternative to what Detroit typically offers in terms of music. He points out that, while most Detroit rappers tend to sample more well known tracks, WTM takes a different approach. Solid use’s samples like the One More Chance rewrite, which adds a unique twist to his sound. It’s a fresh take compared to the usual style of Detroit rap(this one wasn’t mentioned but party in the USA is a good one too).
• Bre Faith, the female vocalist on Solids’ track “FADED,” was drawn to her sound and wanted to collaborate with her on a track. Everything Solids creates is for himself, his process is entirely driven by his own vision.
• Solid likes to keep things versatile. Punching in is easy for him, so he challenges himself to experiment with different songs, flows, and styles constantly pushing to be unique but still staying his authentic self.
• Did Solid ever write his own lyrics? : When he first started rapping, he dropped his first music video in 9th or 10th grade. That track was written, and a lot of his early music was written duo to studio time. Eventually, he got locked up and had a book full of songs he wrote while he was inside, but sadly, he lost it. The last song he remembers writing in that book was “MILLION.” Up until 2019, he pretty much stopped writing and started picking up new techniques from what others around him were doing(recording wise). They had their own recording equipment , so he switched to punching in. Solid hums his bars to himself and runs them through his head, helping him know what his next few bars are going to be.
• In August 2024, Solid dropped an EP titled It Gets Greater Later, featuring tracks like NBA, Truth Is, and Where Would I Be , all of which he recorded in the same night. While the album Imagine That wasn’t out yet, he teased that it would be dropping soon. Sure enough, Imagine That was officially released on August 22nd, 2024.
• Brvdo helped shape Solids’ sound, and with the studio gear available, Solid was making a song every day instead of just staying in the crib all the time bored all the time , that’s how ORIGINATOUR was born. Fans from the first WRLDTOUR tape hit Solid saying they wanted independent music. After that, that’s when Solid met Juno in NY, both of them being the only two from Detroit made them click.
• Does he prefer working in bigger studio sessions with a crowd, or is it more about the vibe? :Some people gravitate towards the bigger studios, but the potential of a track might not hit the same way it would if you were in a smaller, more intimate space with the right energy and genuine connection.
• Background on Imagine That :From March to August 2024, Solid was bouncing between LA and Detroit. When he was in LA, it wasn’t about partying, it was strictly work time. He’s big on praying and has a deep connection with God, so throughout the whole process, he kept asking for signs. And as the project came together, everything aligned in a way that felt like those signs were all pointing to something bigger. By the time the album was finished, it came out to be something amazing, almost like it was meant to be
• How Solid Stays Focused? : Solid has a lot to prove. He’s all about the music, and he knows that’s gonna come with challenges. But he’s not worried about that. He’s certain about where he’s going in music. The only person who can stop Solid is Solid himself. He loves what he does, and his passion keeps him locked in. He stays focused because he knows the vision, and he’s not letting anything throw him off course.
• SLAMASLUTRECORDS? : Just came from being fresh outta high school with a bunch of girls, that’s pretty much where it came from.
