6732 PTE Harold Myles Cleland. 4 Jul 1918, Age 19. 100 years ago today, the kids’ Great Great Uncle Harold fell at the Battle of Hamel in France. He sustained a head injury from an artillery shell explosion but was able to walk back to the first aid post. His mates thought he was OK but he died a few hours later. Harold’s name has been one of 60,000 Australians projected onto the Australian War Memorial over the last few years. He lies in the Adelaide Cemetery near Villers-Bretonneux, just a few metres from where the unknown Australian Soldier was originally buried. Maybe they knew each other, and for a moment were briefly reunited? Hamel was the first time Australian and American troops fought alongside each other and Australian General (Sir) John Monash was the first to employ tanks, artillery and aircraft to support the infantry in what was the beginning of combined arms warfare. Planned to take 90 minutes, the battle was won in 93. RIP #inmemory #ww1memorial #onehundredyearsagotoday
