May her memory be a blessing. #Repost @jewishvoiceforpeace with @use.repost ・・・ With full, heavy hearts, we share that Shatzi, the People’s Bubbie, died at the age of 92. 💔🕯 Shatzi Weisberger — anti-Zionist Jew, lesbian, AIDS nurse, death educator — was a guiding light and source of wisdom and joy for our community. Older than the state of Israel, she showed us Judaism beyond Zionism is possible. Shatzi spent her whole life organizing for a better world where we take care of each other and love each other harder. She was deeply involved in, and forged connections between, various movements, “fighting like hell” for Palestinians, for queer and trans people, for police and prison abolition, and more. Shatzi faced her death as she lived her life, and as she taught others to live and die: fully, intentionally, with an open heart, surrounded by love from the community she built during her near-century in the streets. “I’m dying, and sometimes I’m physically miserable,” she told those loved ones. “Yet this is the best time of my life.” The outpouring of in-person and virtual support Shatzi received in her time of need demonstrates what’s possible when we build political family (and new forms of kinship) that many of us lack in our families of origin, our mainstream institutions, and the cruel systems we live under. While both living and dying, Shatzi conjured a sense of home, belonging, and care in every space she blessed with her presence. Though she felt “isolated in [her] anti-Zionism” when she joined the Palestinian liberation movement in 1983, she ultimately showed us that anti-Zionist Jews — and everyone fighting for justice everywhere — aren’t alone. We have each other, we have elders, we have history. While we no longer physically have Shatzi, we’ll always have her memory.
