STATE-ENDORSED VIOLENCE AGAINST PEACEFUL PROTESTORS IN TURKEY
"Turkey’s ruling party, the Justice and Development Party, has made plans to turn the only green space left in Taksim, the heart of Istanbul’s European side, into a shopping mall as part of an “urban development project.” The decision to level Gezi Park to make space for a mall was taken in an undemocratic and non-participatory manner. Relevant stakeholders had no say in the urban planning process, which is a major problem in and of itself. The Taksim Platform (www.taksimplatformu.org) has been opposing these plans for the past six months.
Three days ago at midnight bulldozers charged into Gezi Park, home to century-old trees. Concerned citizens quickly shared this information on Facebook, Twitter (#direngeziparki, #occupygezi), Instagram, and other social media, and numerous other people joined them to stop the destruction. From then on, protestors have been occupying Gezi Park day and night, despite being attacked by police forces with pepper gas and high pressure water jets.
Today, in the fifth-story office of Women for Women’s Human Rights – New Ways, we witnessed two instances of police violence, half an hour apart. In the first instance, a panzer targeted people with high pressure water jets laced with chemicals. In the second attack, about 20 police targeted protestors as though they were snipers, and fired pepper gas capsules at them directly. In both instances, there were children, young people, women and the elderly affected by the gas. Although all our windows were closed, our eyes and noses are still burning, four hours after the attacks.
Gezi Park has currently been emptied of protestors, and is surrounded by police forces. We don’t know what will happen next, although we have received news that the police shot pepper gas capsules into the Taksim Metro Station, and closed the doors. Over a hundred protestors are said to be injured, and hospitals around Taksim are overflowing. Tents set up by volunteer doctors were also hit by pepper gas. One young man has already died. Internet access has been limited or shut down around Taksim. The national media appears to be censored, as the broadcasting on these events is limited and does not depict reality. Our main source of information is social networking sites and foreign media.
This is a brief description of the current regime in Turkey, and how it deals with peaceful protest, freedom of expression and the right to information. Muslim countries looking to emulate “The Turkish Model” should perhaps think twice about doing so.
These events reflect an inconceivable use of state power and the violation of basic human rights. Gezi Park is not only one of the last green lungs on the European side of Istanbul that must be preserved, it has now also become a symbol of resistance against conservative business interests, neoliberal capitalism, and an autocratic mode of governmental rule instilling terror among the public.
As Women for Women’s Human Rights – New Ways, we are very much against the use of state endorsed police violence, and support the Gezi Park Resistance fully.
Please spread the word."
