The Lwa Road Less Traveled

Way, way back in 2010 we did an online Voodoo Conference.  I was looking back through some old files and ran across this PowerPoint presentation that I used at the conference.  We tend to become comfortable in Voodoo.  We love our good old regular lwa!  Who doesn’t love to work with Papa Legba?  Or Ogoun?  Or Erzulie? Or Damballah? Or whomever your favorite lwa is!? That is natural, normal, and perfectly wonderful.  

However, there are some lwa out there that maybe you don’t know about or maybe you don’t know how to serve.  Below is a link to a little primer on perhaps some new lwa friends for you.  You can never have too many lwa to work with, right? :-)

Ancestor Altars

I was fortunate enough to be in Mexico this past November over Dia de los Muertos. This is a holiday to honor and remember our ancestors of the past. There are many public celebrations such as parades, food vendor, arts and crafts where families can gather. There are also altars (public and private) where families can give thanks, honor, and give offerings to those that have past.

I wanted to share some of these amazing altars I was able to visit. Voodoo has a similar celebration as do many other cultures and religions around the world where we remember, honor and make offerings to our ancestors. It is called Fet Ghede and although it has passed this year, working, praying and communicating with your ancestors is very important in the Voodoo religion. I hope you enjoy these photos.

Choosing Your Perspective

Today was the absolute worst day ever  And don’t try to convince me that  There’s something good in every day  Because, when you take a closer look  This world is a pretty evil place.  Even if  Some goodness does shine through once in a while  Satisfaction and happiness don’t last  And it’s not true that  It’s all in the mind and heart  Because  True happiness can be obtained  Only if one’s surroundings are good  It’s not true that goodness exists  I’m sure that you can agree that  The reality  Creates  My attitude  It’s all beyond my control  And you’ll never in a million years hear me say that  Today was a good day.

Receiving the Lwa Through Others

The lwa influence our lives every day and in different ways. Whether it be that great parking spot or praise for a job well done at work, they help us. Another way they influence our lives is through other people like family, friends, and co-workers. One of my best friends has recently been teaching me fixing things on my own instead of calling someone to do it. This leadership and taking control of your own problems is General Ogoun’s influencing me through my friend. It made me think if something needs fixed, are you the type who thinks about who to call or are you the type that thinks about how you’re going to fix it? I used to first think about who to call, but that’s not who I really am. After realizing Ogoun’s influence through my friend, I’m now the type who say’s fix it on your own. It’s a great place to be. Think about others and how they influence you. It might be the lwa.
