Hi! I was wondering if you had any advice for fictives who are homesick for their source. One of our members is having a really hard time, and I'm not sure how to help them. Thank you! - the Apricity system

Hi there,

I understand this feeling. We have several fictives in our system who often feel homesick. Everyone experiences it to a different degree as well, and not all techniques will work for everyone. In our experience, the best way to feel better from feeling homesick is time. It is okay to feel this way and mourn the place you came from, and this process takes a different amount of time for everyone.

To help ease the feeling in the meantime, you might want to try to surround them with some comforts of home if possible, something that is familiar to them and can help them feel connected to their source. Even indulging in source material can help, in small doses (although it may not be best for everyone). Along those same lines, just generally indulging in things they enjoy can help. Small treats to help them feel better, a favourite food or a new shirt or a good movie. It doesn't take away the feeling, but it helps to not feel quite so miserable.

I would also recommend getting into hobbies if possible. Letting them find something they enjoy doing and can work at and create and maybe even share is a good way for any alters to feel like they are establishing a place within their system and help them feel more comfortable being present. Letting them figure out who they are now and maybe what they want to do can be a great help moving forward.

One thing that I wouldn't necessarily recommend is trying to find fictive or fictionkin from your source. In our experience, this doesn't necessarily help with the feelings of being homesick. It can also give undue pressure to form an established relationship with someone you have just met, because you share a canon. Fictives and fictionkin will always deviate from their canon in some way, and it's not always helpful to try to force something that may no longer fit anymore.
