Movie Orgy
This weekend I saw three very different but equally amazing movies. Here is what I thought:
Kung Fu Panda 2: This is one of the first animated sequels that I was excited to see in theaters, and it didn't disappoint. The story was much more complex and heart-breaking, while still having the sense of humor that made the original so endearing. The animation of the action scenes was superb, and they also had very interesting alternative animation for the story-telling/dream sequences a la HP7 with the Tales of Beedle the Bard. It looked great and I loved it. This movie made me tear up, which is hard, and they set it up for a third movie which actually made me excited and not angry. Go see it!
X-Men: First Class: Went into this movie wanting one thing: Michael Fassbender in pefectly tailored 60s clothing kicking ass and being evil. I received that and was mildly surprised by the rest of the film. The action was fun, the acting was campy but good, and the story was unique but stayed true to the Marvel Universe and the previous X-Men films. Kevin Bacon (hereafter referred to as the Baconator) was an AWFUL super-villain, but he added to the camp factor of the movie and was very laughable (though he did speak fairly decent German, which was surprising.) This movie is not for people who don't love X-Men and corny comic book movies, so don't waste your time if you're a snob/douche. The costuming was cheap and cheesy, but the on-location shooting was gorgeous, especially the scene involving Michael Fassbender in South America killing ex-Nazi's (this was by far the best scene of the movie, fun dialogue, gorgeous locale and badass action scenes. I actually think that they should make a movie called "Michael Fassbender Dressing Nice and Killing Bad Guys, because holy hell is he good at it.) It was also really fun seeing it at Midnight with all the other Basement Dwelling Geeks who love this shit, because they laugh at all the right parts and make fun of all the right stuff (I mean really, wtf was January Jones wearing? and that cameo I won't ruin because it was too good? We all died.) Go see it.
Bridesmaids I love funny women. There is a huge shortage of hilarious female-driven comedies that DON'T involve fighting over a man or other bullshit Hollywood tropes. This group of women (led by Kristin Wig, who has had my heart since her bit part in Knocked Up) simply kicked ass. The humor was disgusting, the swearing was perfect, and the situations were hilarious. This movie isn't for everyone, my Mom almost puked when they got food poisoning and were puking on each other, but if you love watching women be dirty and funny this movie will endlessly entertain you.
P.S. You know you go see movies too much when the Concession Guy at Star John R (His name is Kevin, btw) becomes your movie boyfriend.
