Poesia di Mario Luzi. che è l'estrema sintesi dei primi canti del Purgatorio della Divina Commedia. Dante colloca l'altissimo ed erto monte del Purgatorio su una spiaggia circondata dal mare; il poeta vi giunge all'alba, uscendo dalla notte dell'Inferno. Ascendendo le varie cornici del monte, le anime purganti espiano le loro colpe e salgono verso il Paradiso.

Nel 1990 per il teatro Luzi fece un'originale riscrittura del Purgatorio dantesco dal titolo Purgatorio. La notte lava la mente, rappresentato anche al Ravenna Festival del 1994.
