Conrad Veidt film recommendations & sources.
So someone left me several anon messages:
Hello! I love your posts about discovering Conrad Veidt. (I sent you an ask before which his films you would suggest most but I am too shy to go non anon and I’m sorry if this looks creepy (and if suggestions would mean having to write a long post, I didnt mean stress >_<)
Part two (still me! Long post got cut, sorry) My internet is slow and my computer is old so I can’t download many videos, so then I thought I’d ask you suggest the best of his movies! You are Conrad’s biggest fan after all. Download sites would be good but I can’t use torrents. Is there anywhere else then the conradveidtforever site you could link me?
Hello there! Apologies for not getting back to you sooner… life is a giant ball of non-stop business at the moment.
And honestly, there’s no need to apologise. It’s never a stress to talk about Connie, and I’m always so glad when people show an interest in him as he - comparatively speaking - gets so little attention on here. (I’m replying to both of your messages here to save time)
Okay, so, firstly thank you! I’m so pleased that my descent into Veidtdom posts seem to have been successful in shining a light onto Die Veidt and his all-encompassing awesomeness. I will get round to finishing the last phases, promise.
And now onto recommendations. Well, it really does depend on what kind of films you like/enjoy in the first place, because we’re lucky in that Connie’s career branches into almost every interesting period of cinema’s development/transformation - from silents, to daring and outspoken for the time LGBTQ and STD content, to early talkies, to innovative camerawork, to interwar German cinema, to historical epics, to WWII British cinema, to honing the espionage film, to technicolour, to the early American melodrama, to some of the most famous films in cinematic history (read: Caligari and Casablanca). Not to mention he worked with *a lot* of important and innovative and inventive directors throughout the years, some of them when they were still just starting out, as well as a number of actors who became sensational stars. I mean honestly, his career is fascinating from a film historian’s point of view, because you could almost trace the very evolution of film through his work. But that’s an essay… probably a book in and of itself. I’m getting distracted! Sorry.
So recommendations. Well obviously Caligari and Casablanca are a must. But you’ve most probably already seen those, as most people who are even vaguely interested in film have. Some of my personal favourites:
-The Student of Prague (1926)
-The Man Who Laughs (1928)
-Der schwarze Husar (1932)
-Ich und die Kaiserin (1933)
-The Passing of the Third Floor Back (1935)
-Contraband (1940)
-The Thief of Bagdad (1940)
-A Woman’s Face (1941)
-All Through the Night (1942)
I think those are reasonably representative of his phenomenal range, as well as being fantastic films - all very different in both characterisation and feel. I’d also recommend Rasputin (1932) if, like me, you’re fascinated by the story and circumstance of the man in question, as well as the Romanov dynasty, and it’s really interesting to see what Connie does with the role i.e. not play him as the evil conniving magician that Rasputin has so oft. been portrayed as. It’s not an exceptional film by any stretch of the imagination, but I do find Connie’s performance *extremely* interesting, so riding on that alone I’d say it’s worth a watch.
And then if you want just insatiable sexy pantherness I’d say go for: -I Was a Spy (1933) -Bella Donna (1934) -Dark Journey (1937) -Escape (1940)
We’re all very fortunate in that all of these films are available to download from veidtveidtveidt.tumblr.com
So yes, those are my recommendations! As opposed to my gut reaction which would be to say watch ALL of his films ;)
Hope this helps, and enjoy!
