Time Lapse: Baker’s Global Rainbow. . This piece is a tribute to the original rainbow flag designed by artist Gilbert Baker to honor the San Francisco Gay Freedom Parade in 1978. The design of the original flag had eight colors, each one with its own symbolism, but because of practical matters, two of those colors disappeared to give rise to the flag that we have today: a six-color rainbow. This Time Lapse was created with unused material I had from previous pieces. I was able to spend a few weeks in New York. I had to take care of a few things and @crisispato and I managed to travel back to our other home... It was the first time we were there since March 10th and, although it was unique to experience the city during these strange times, I decided I needed to document it, the same way I’ve been documenting cities for the past 8 years... This is from a wall I have shot many times, right on our neighborhood, the West Village... I tagged along @crisispato who had some work to do in Rio and I spent the days walking around the visible parts of the city but also the invisible ones... When my father was alive, we used to drive almost every day between Spain and Portugal. We used to avoid highways and always took narrow roads, finding joy in all the hidden treasures we ran into. Now that the borders are closed because of the pandemic, I wanted to post some of the images I took some time ago... The women I know from Galicia and the women I know from Portugal both share an incredible resilience towards whatever life brings them...
