30 Ways To Say "I Love You" (3/30)
30 Days of Fic: June Addition.
DAY THREE: "Have fun." (prompt 52)
day 3 | season 5 | wc; 404 | ao3 | @today-in-fic | previous fic |
I wanted to write a Diana involved fic in which Scully wasn't as jealous and instead appreciating that Mulder needs to do stuff to help himself, it just so happens to involve Diana but either are happy about that part and just chose to ignore it.
Following Behind Him.
His packing up has you questioning the time; from checking your watch, to the time on the computer, to the clock on the wall. Nope, you aren’t mistaken, they all read 4:27pm. You also weren’t mistaken in that your workday doesn’t finish until 6pm so where was he going one hour and thirty minutes beforehand?
“Diana’s having some issues with a case,” Mulder tells you after you ask. “So I said I’d come down and help out.”
You try not to bristle at the mention of Diana- you ignore that part completely. Instead you focus on the part where this is giving him a break from the mundane work- Mulder really can, and will, go crazy from a lack of intelligent stimuli.
“Does Kersh know?” you ask, already sensing the answer.
Mulder glances towards the closed door leading to Kersh’s office.
“His meetings go on forever. I’ll be back before he’s out.”
You nod. “Do you want me to cover just in case?”
Mulder thinks for a moment then shakes his head.
“I don’t want you to get into any more trouble for me.”
The guilt still gnawed at him for your ending up here with him. And for the pricey bill Kersh did end up sending your way for the Crump case. He wouldn’t stop breaking the rules, you knew that, but he would try to loosen the collateral damage made towards you.
“Well, have fun.” You try to make it sound as genuine as possible, no hint of snarky or jealously (though you were jealous about him getting to use braincells because you were sure your own were dying from lack of us at this point)
“I’d offer you let you come but…”
“Spending time with Diana doesn’t appeal to me?” you finish for him.
He laughs. “Yeah, something like that.”
It was right. The less time spent around Diana the better you felt for it.
You say your goodbyes and you are about to turn back to your work when he is calling to you again.
“Hey!” You look at him. “I’ll have a snoop around and see what I can find to investigate on Saturday.”
You frown. “It’s Christmas Eve on Saturday,” you tell him.
“For you, maybe, but not for me.”
You shake your head, turning back to the computer. He’ll be back with a case ready for Saturday and despite your protest you’ll be there following behind him.
