My XFoil broke and wouldn't converge, but heh, at least I'm starting to feel like a real engineer.

drag coefficient of 1200 what the fuck xfoil. a solid cube has a Dc of like 1 come on.
> Week 2 (Part II) - XFOIL & MATLAB Day
- April 11th (Wednesday)
With data collection that took place this past Monday, we were finally able to begin data analysis and figure plot generation. In our methodology we decided to compare all of our experimental results from the wind tunnel to simulated data obtained from XFOIL 6.99.
Damien and I decided to handle working with XFOIL and produce data and plots from the program for our entire test matrix (3 velocities and 10 angles). Meanwhile Josh and Yevgeniy got to work with the experimental data. Together, Damien and I worked to create plots illustrating:
Coefficient of lift/drag v. AoA
L/D v. AoA
Coefficient of pressure over the geometry
Each of these plots were created for the different velocities (15 m/s, 22 m/s, and 30 m/s), so we ended up with quite a large number of plots for just the simulated data.
We will certainly have to be make decisions in the future about what plots we would like to include in our report and how exactly we should present them. Should we superimpose the numerical and experimental data on top of each other? Keep them separate? Feature a certain velocity condition? Plot each velocity and use a legend? In the meantime I thought it would be neat to make a .gif showing the coefficient of pressure changing as the AoA increased:
Each velocity appears to stay rather consistent with the others, with a bit of variation towards the upper surface leading edge at higher angles of attack. While I am not confident as to why this happens, I would have to guess it has to do with the way the airflow travels over the first section on the upper surface. Since the flow is being accelerated over this section of the airfoil, perhaps variations in pressure are more readily captured there. Another thing that is made apparent through this graph is how the coefficient of pressure becomes greater in magnitude (or more negative) on the upper surface with an increase in AoA.
We were also reminded that we are going to be using the wake probe on Monday. It was suggested that we should make a test matrix that is somewhat similar to what we already have tested for and that we should avoid stall. Therefore, we are aiming to collect data for 2 speeds (15 m/s and 30 m/s) and 4 angles of attack (-5, 4, 10, & 12). Our group will consider testing at a third speed if time allows it.
This week we were also notified that we should begin thinking about our next project, Flow Visualization II, a sort of continuation of a prior assignment from our fluid dynamics class.
I decided that I wanted to work with my friend, Bennett. We briefly talked about ideas of what we wanted to do flow visualization of, but we do not have any concrete ideas just yet. An example of what were thinking about would be to capture visualizations of a frisbee in the wind tunnel. However, this is certainly not a final decision and we will be exploring other options and ideas. I am really looking forward to making another video. I like being able to put in some creativity in the presentation and I hope we capture something that looks cool!
