i love how xia ling in the lingfeng road arc understands yan ruofu's situation because she's been there in season 1, and she tries to pay it forward by being kind and forward in her desire to help, even if yan ruofu spites her for it at the start.

she still isn't the greatest combat person, but li xuanyuan's medicine prowess is it's own unique talent in a world of fighters.

the different adaptations of rakshasa street give the main character leads such different vibes.

the cao yanbing in the donghua feels like a young but battle-hardened warrior who's been given too many expectations to handle. cao yanbing in rakshasa street (2017) live action feels like a upstart young man who's only goal is to live a good life with his brother. cao yanbing in hero is back (2024) is like the classic hero figure searching for the truth and being sent down a path of no return.

on the other hand, xia ling in the donghua is a loud and boisterous figure who learns responsibility and unlocks her guardian spirit. xia ling of rakshasa street (2017) is determined yet clueless hero-in-training who's been tossed into a life she can't comprehend. xiabling of hero is back (2024) is confident in her own power but indecisive about her identity between the two worlds.

perhaps the impressions im getting of bith characters is different because of the different arcs of the story each adaptation covers, but it's interesting to watch. its a little frustrating how they keep changing the character backstories and worldbuilding (cao yanbing's family background, the brother's true relationship, the existence of the spirit realm etc etc) but not too bad all things considered
