Okay so someone for sure got an early access to this before I proof read it cause even tho I saved it as a draft tumblr pranked me and posted it instead. Anyways this was finished before lantern rite but I wanted it to be posted at the same time as Nahida's part so... Thus the wait

"Everyone knows Xiao is the best guy!"

Things were as busy as always with the Lantern rite coming up, as if that wasn't enough there was adepti popularity contest. One your boyfriend was signed into against his will.

Even though Lantern rite comes every year you always find yourself unprepared for the work awaiting you. As more people visit the inn the less you see your boyfriend. Though that made it very easy to scheme. There was a small popularity vote where everyone was hyping up their favorite adeptus- and while you were absolutely biased… it didn't make you any less open about supporting your lover. You were aware that he wouldn't care about a popularity vote (and would probably be against competing), but you couldn't help it. The world should know about the greatness of the conqueror of demons!

Jokes aside, you weren't really telling everyone around to vote for Xiao, your job was to advertise it. The whole deal was to just do a special dish themed after the most beloved adeptus.

“Where is it…” you asked yourself, looking at the bulletin board. Weird, the poster advertising the contest should've been hanged by now… maybe your coworker forgot about it?

“Looking for this?” Xiao said unamused, holding the advertisement “I thought you had more important work when you said you're busy” he sighed, probably questioning what humans deem as important.

“I was assigned to it so yes, it's important” you took your hand out, waiting for him to give you back the poster, which he did. He didn't have any comments to that, he was just acting like this because he is one of the contestants “Do you want me to cross you off the list?” while you weren't sure if you could actually do it- especially since at the moment he was leading the vote- you still cared about his comfort “I'm going to have the evening off, so if you want we can ignore this and go out somewhere”

“... Do whatever you want. I don't care about this game” is all he said before disappearing quickly, not giving you any chances to speak.

And so you continued to work. Trying your best to spread Xiao propaganda- I mean, asking others to join the vote. You didn't actually need to tell others about how amazing your boyfriend is, people cheered for him regardless. It was rather ironic that someone so uninterested in the contest was winning… Still, it made you happy. Knowing he's appreciated makes the world seem more fair somehow.

People really didn't know much about Xiao, they don't see him around much either though by their logic that means if they haven't seen any sight of evil, then he's doing his job incredibly well.

The guests at the inn often asked you who was winning- which you weren't allowed to answer, but the way everyone around was talking about Xiao some came to their own conclusions. The closer it got to the announcement the more people talked about it. However, you cared more about the hour you could tell your shift goodbye, and hello to your sweetheart.

“Xiao” you called out to him as usual he was standing somewhere unreachable to you, or anyone else really. Not unless they had a weird hobby of climbing random parts of a building for whatever reason. Though you did see the traveler do that too so maybe there is something to this activity you're missing…

Before you even finished that train of thought he was by your side, or maybe he was there for longer and just waited for you to follow up “I wanted to tell you that the contest results will be out soon. Do you want to go and see the announcement yourself?”

“I'm not going” he said bluntly, crossing his arms “This victory doesn't mean anything to me” trailing off he only looked into the distance. His eyes locked on the lanterns that were set free far from here.

You walked by his side, placing your hand on his shoulder you made him turn to face you “I suspected as such. I just thought I'd let you know that you're appreciated by more people than you think” flashing him a soft smile you knew he wasn't going to argue. Still, he wasn't going to truly acknowledge it. He didn't seek validation, and you were aware of that.

Though you didn't mention that he won by more than just a few votes… no matter what you say his mindset won't change. But you were still proud, oh so proud.

“You’re not here to convince me to join you?” He raised his eyebrow, unsure of what you tried to convey with your expression.

“I'm the one joining you. I told you, I'm off the clock for the evening. So unless duty calls, I'd like for us to spend time together” when you stated that he started walking away from the inn “Follow me then” his tone softened, happy at the prospect of spending time together.

After reaching that perfect spot he sat down on the grass, gesturing for you to join. He always found the best spots for watching the lanterns. Despite you being together for so long, he still finds himself surprised by how well you understood him. You just knew when to stop pushing and he appreciated that. He was always bad with direct speech, but the way he held you, that shine in his eyes- it all said it like the countless origami figures he gave you: you're the most precious to him.

But… the next day he was met with an Alatus Almond Tofu special he certainly cared more about that win suddenly.

Since last night, the advertisement had been hanged- and Xiao was absolutely interested in it. Although at first the sound of a new variant seemed absurd, he knew himself that he sometimes edited the original recipe… so there was no reason to not give it a chance.

“I won..?” He tried to act nonchalant, though his eyes betrayed him.

“Should I have told you?”

“It wouldn't matter…” he started “Though it would be a shame to let the efforts of making a new recipe go to waste”

Seeing his eyes light up at the sight of his favorite food you couldn't help but let out a small chuckle. That made him snap out of the daze and he quickly composed himself “I take it was your idea?”

“It didn't take much convincing, but yes. I thought of it” you admit with pride, after all if your idea made him happy- that's a sign it was a great one.

“I see… Then I suppose this wasn't a complete waste of time…”

“You say that like you had to actually hold a campaign to win”

“I didn't, but you did” he responded bluntly as ever. It's possible you slipped his name more than you thought. You could swear you were being careful with it… but does it matter? It all ended well, and both of you were happy with the result.

AN: What can I say? Xiao's a cutie patootie and I love him dearly. Is he a little out of touch and awkward? Yes. He is, but that just makes me love him more I fear.

CW: None! Just fluff with Xiao and Reader! His karmic debt does come up a few times, but don't worry, there's nothing particularly angsty said about it. As usual, Reader is gender neutral and only ever referred to as you! <3

Xiao is quite an interesting lover, to say the least. That's not to say he's a bad one though! He's just got an odd way of navigating your relationship.

Unsurprisingly, despite being who even knows how old at this point, Xiao has never pursued romance before. Until you managed to worm your way into his heart in a way he simply couldn't escape he had never entertained the notion of being in a relationship. It would be a distraction from his duties and a risk for his hypothetical partner considering his karmic debt. In short, it would be impractical; an unnecessary and potentially dangerous undertaking.

That being said, this is novel for him. Though he is aware of what he is feeling and has a general idea of what to expect with such a relationship, he has no experience. Said lack of experience combined with his mild social ineptitude often leads him to struggle with expressing his love. He's unsure how to go about all of this in a way that feels comfortable, so his displays of affection tend to be more subtle in nature. If you didn't know him so well, you'd likely find it difficult to believe he treats you any different than he does the average mortal.

However, you do know him. You know him enough to know that he doesn't whisk just any mortal off to, perhaps odd and secluded, but beautiful spots around Liyue in the moments he has to spare. Nor does he allow just any mortal to run their fingers through his hair or idly trace over the markings on his body. Not just any mortal can take up such an amount of his time. You are an exception. An exception who gets to bask in the yaksha's presence.

Although he's certainly touch averse to a degree given his concerns about harming you, I feel he's likely also touch starved for that same reason. He craves what he feels he can't have. Despite his worries, you still willingly offer him the pleasure of your fingers interlaced with his, soft kisses on his cheeks, and warm arms wrapped around his thin frame; all things that he cannot honestly deny that he enjoys. He may warn you time and time again of the karma he carries and the danger you face being so close to him, yet he can't bring himself to shrink away from you. He appreciates your presence dearly; perhaps more than he should.

Not only does he give you the privilege of being near him, but the privilege of his attention too. He's, of course, not very talkative, but he'd listen to you talk endlessly if only he was allowed. He may not understand everything you talk about, but that doesn't matter to him, he'll listen anyway. Xiao will silently take note of it when you're talking about things that you like, mentally filing it away for later. Don't be surprised when, after a conversation, he just so happens to bring you a flower you said you liked off-handedly or you find something you mentioned that you needed conveniently left somewhere in your home. Xiao is quite attentive.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Xiao is quite protective of you. If anyone or anything poses a threat to you, he will undoubtedly stand in the way. You're quite precious to him, so he would never allow you to be hurt on his watch. He doesn't really worry though, not because he doesn't care, obviously, but because he's well aware he has more than enough strength to protect you. So long as you call for him when you're in danger, he can handle it. He'll keep you safe.

Aside from the few closest to the two of you, it's likely that no one has a clue you two are together. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Xiao keeps quiet about your relationship and naturally expects that you would do the same. As far as he's concerned, this is between the two of you. No one else really needs to know about it. Of course, this isn't out of shame or embarrassment with your relationship, Xiao just doesn't see any reason for it to be a public affair. Besides that, it might just cause unnecessary troubles for you both if it were public knowledge.

Overall, being with Xiao is a surprisingly comfortable experience. To others, he is the final remaining Yaksha, the Conqueror of Demons, but with you, he is simply your lover. Your quiet, but incredibly gentle lover.
