no such thing — john mayer
“Welcome to the real world, Potter.”
It had been a throwaway comment, really. One that he probably shouldn’t have remembered. But as Harry left the courtroom, a glimpse of blonde hair brought it back again. The context surrounding what Malfoy had once tried to say to him was of no consequence any more, but the statement itself couldn’t have been more relevant.
Real world? What real world? Harry had long since accepted that fighting for his survival was his life, and it made no difference whether he was ‘safely’ inside the castle or not. That ’real world’ was, for him, reality.
It felt, now, like ten years had passed since that particular exchange of words — in reality, it couldn’t have been more than two. But the irony in standing in front of her in that courtroom was that she must, surely, be coming to the same conclusion.
There’s no such thing as the real world.
No, indeed. Even though Voldemort was gone, consequences remained. There was no differentiating between school and not-school. All of Malfoy’s actions, both inside the castle and out, were being scrutinised in this court case, along with those of his parents. Harry was providing evidence to support the Malfoys, but in the end, their fate would be down to the Wizengamot.
There was certainly no illusion of grandeur or wealth to shelter Malfoy now, nor his parents, but oddly enough, as he nodded his farewell, Harry found that his animosity towards the three had diminished.
In the end, they’d been on the same side. Against Voldemort.
