Artist Spotlight: Xu-Qu

Chinese contemporary artist, Xu Qu, is widely known for his original multiform approach. He’s used a wide range of mediums including videos, paintings, sculptures and installations, with works exhibited extensively in Beijing, China; Australia; Germany and Basel, Switzerland. Today, however, we zero in on his recent acrylic on canvas pieces from two powerfully messaged series: Currency Wars is series of banknotes from across the world used to create colorful abstract compositions. Xu-Qu’s War reflects the long notion of art as a commodity. Maze is an extension of Currency of War: These paintings show infinite mazes with many different choices representing an era of mass technology and social networks at their fingertips but cannot differentiate between what is manful and what is not.
