For every “Trope” I get, I will post a TV trope for my muse.
Manic Pixie Dream Boy: This extract from the page says it all.
“ Let’s say you’re a soulful, brooding person, living a sheltered, emotionless existence. If only someone could come along and open your heart to the great, wondrous adventure of life… Have no fear, the Manic Pixie Dream Boy is here to give new meaning to your life! He’s stunningly attractive, high on life, full of wacky quirks and idiosyncrasies ( generally including childlike playfulness and a tendency towards petty crime ), often with a touch of wild hair dye.
He’s inexplicably obsessed with our stuffed-shirt hero or heroine, on whom he will focus his kuh-razy antics until the person learns to live freely and love madly. ” —It sounds pretty much to what Sakon likes to do.
In canon, he works like this for a few characters; like Mitsunari, Katsuie and in my opinion Gyobu and the Toyotomi in general. He’s is the bubbly sidekick ( in an army full of gloomy people after Ieyasu’s departure ) and tries to lift up the spirits of those around him. After actually warming up to them, he also ends up admiring Hideyoshi and Hanbei and gets really attached to Yoshitsugu, working together a lot and— with Sakon becoming the main victim of Gyobu’s pranks. He might stick out like a neon light in such place and with a group of serious people, but he is having fun and is happy of having found his way in life.
For Katsuie ( weirdly enough, only applicable to Sakon’s Drama route ) is not as inexplicable as he wants to help someone whom he sees his past self ( without mention that, at least in canon, Kiyouki knew and thought that Katsuie in the past was cool and ambitious ) and push him in a direction that can allow him to obtain a purpose in life and regain the light in his eyes. Though, in Masamune’s Drama Route it’s played straight, as it never shows ‘why’ Sakon takes interest in Katsuie aside thinking that he’s like a ghost and want to play with him.
Rp-wise, let’s go with Youxi and Sakon as an example. Yuki qualifies as someone that got stuck with Sakon and his antics, he defies her traditional values being a messy oddball that she can’t fully understand but made her happier anyway.
And even though, I’ve played him as a deconstruction, heavily leaning in the resentment of being idolized as something that they are not ( normal verse as a subdued feeling, and for deserter verse one of the main reasons of why things went wrong with him. ) and only being loved for his joyful attitude, that at a point became a facade in fear of being thrown away and replaced… In most cases, he is capable of getting back into this mindset, though not always, for the sake of help people.
It overlaps with other tropes that make him fit this one, like: Keet, Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life, a ( verse dependent ) Chronic Hero Syndrome and ( also verse dependent ) Love Martyr status.
