CHAPTER 9  •  I climb the walls, no one sees me

They don’t say any farewell words. When Arya’s maid comes to accompany her at noon, Gendry bids her to wait outside, but they don’t say anything, both too scared of what it could mean for them. He just embraces her and she takes his lips to hers, kissing him deeply like she might not get the chance ever again. It feels like both need all their strength to break the contact between their lips and when they do, Gendry immediately kisses her forehead and her brows. They will see each other again before their plan really starts, but they can’t help savoring the calm before their own personal storm.

Gendry and Arya settle into an agreement: if neither of them have a date to go with to the school dance, they’re going together. But it’s Gendry’s last year he really wants a date and not any date, he wants Arya.

CHAPTER 8  •  you see the truth

That was the first time she saw him since the supper she had with his family, but ever since that night the way he had averted his eyes when he saw Gendry kept coming back to her mind, like there was some hidden meaning behind it. She was sure he’d behaved like that because, like everyone seemed keen to remind them, Gendry looked much alike Renly.

Margaery had mentioned briefly how Loras trusted Renly… did that, by any chance, meant that Renly also trusted Loras?

With his secrets? Maybe with his plans?

The thought lingers on Arya’s mind.

If only she had the chance to have a chat with Ser Loras Tyrell...

CHAPTER 7  •  little ghost, you are listening

“I was asked to deliver this to you, lady,” she hands her a note and Arya immediately recognizes the Tyrell sigil sealing it.

She’s not sure what to expect. Lady Margaery had arrived two days earlier, her mother, grandmother and a series of cousins with her.

Arya doesn’t know why any of them would take interest in her.

Carefully, she opens the letter, as if she fears its content might attack her somehow.

It’s so short she’s not sure it might be called a letter, more like a note inviting her to dine with Lady Margaery Tyrell of Highgarden the following night. The polite and enthusiastic tone doesn’t make Arya less uneasy.

She’s pretty sure they aren’t inviting her, of all people in that castle, out of courtesy.

CHAPTER 6  •  together we can make something beautiful

He is about to lie on bed when she calls him, “Gendry, wait,” he turns to her standing on the other side. “I want to talk about something” He waits, eyes wide in expectation and Arya doesn’t know what to say. She hadn’t really thought of words, supposing she’d have them when the time came, but she clearly does not. Gendry sits on his side of bed, still waiting for her and she bits her lower lip, trying to come up with something. “I—” she stutters. “What’s wrong, Arya?” he frowns, starting to get worried and she sighs, frustrated with her inability to be direct. She walks to the bed, slower than normal, like she’s too concentrated on her thoughts to focus on walking. Her mind, however, can’t come up with a single word. “What’s wrong, Arya?” Gendry repeats seriously when she sits on her side of the bed. “Nothing’s wrong, Gendry,” she tries to reassure him, but he’s still frowning. This is going terribly , she cringes internally.

CHAPTER 4  •  my wounded wing’s still beating

“Beth said you’re not eating,” Gendry comments one night (…)

“It feels wrong,” it’s all she says, staring at the dark.

“What does?”

“Everything,” she swallows, “Everything feels wrong. Here I am, sleeping in a featherbed, living in a castle, feeding from the enemy’s food and… and… by their side, while I do nothing. I just sit here and walk through these halls, being only one half of me”

Arya says it all in one raging breath. It’s the first time she says something of the sort to Gendry, but she doesn’t mind. If he was loyal to the Lannisters, he’d have done something to her by now, and he had proven to her more than once that it wasn’t the case. She thought about it more times than she could name and she prayed to the gods she was right, because she couldn’t take it if he turned against her now that she decided to trust him.

CHAPTER 5  •  i walk the halls invisibly

She searches for a window turned to Blackwater Bay, desperate to get a glimpse, to put an image to those sounds, to make something out of it. She knows there’s no way to know what is really happening from there, but she wants to see it. When she does find a large window, her heart skips a beat in dismay, her face being illuminated by the bizarre tone of magic green fire and, mixed with it, large orange flames too.

Gendry is there, it’s her first thought.

There’s a part of her saying that she doesn’t know that. From that distance, she can’t see much but it seems that the major part of the blaze is on the ships, while Gendry was supposed to be supporting the walls. The thought doesn’t do much to comfort her.

He’s still out there.
