What Is a Gulet Yacht?

The gulet is a handmade boat from Turkey and they are mainly built in the coastal towns of Marmaris (Bozburun) and Bodrum. The traditionally built wooden boatst are called Gulets and are usually made from mahogany.

The name Gulet is probably derived from the French word Goulette, a ship that sailed along the French coast in the 18th century. Some people say it comes from the Italian word Galiota. The Gulet used to be used as a cargo ship, fishing boat and was used as a base for sponge divers.

In the 1980s, when tourism started to develop in Greece and Turkey, it was soon possible to modernize this beautiful wooden boat to the current gulet. That means huge spacious cabins and sitting areas both inside and outside. The average gulet has a length of 25 meters to 45 meters, You have them with 4 cabins, 5 cabins and even with 8 cabins.

There is always a crew present, so just like a sailboat that you can sail yourself is not the case. You have the captain in charge, the cook, a sailor (1 or 2), a host or hostess and a technician. In some cases you have a crew of 7 or more and sometimes it is 3 or 4. It is due to the luxury of the gulet. The more luxurious the gulet, the more crew there is to satisfy the guests.
