"I Want To Go Home"
Yancy x reader
Summary: you visit Yancy every third Sunday, but he's finally decided that just one day every three weeks isn't enough. He wants to see you every single day.
Warnings: bittersweet but hopeful ending, and mostly fluff!
A/N: i havent written for Yancy yet, so I thought I'd change that! I love this guy so much- so hopefully you guys enjoy this one
It was the third Sunday of the month, which meant it was visitation day.
Yancy was excited, and nervous, bouncing on the balls of his feet in his cell. This happened every single visitation day without fail.
He was both excited to see you, and nervous you wouldn't come.
You never missed a Sunday, so he wasn't sure why he expected you to forget about him this time, but he always worried. He missed you so much and he wasn't sure how he'd get through without his visits from you.
As much as he liked being in prison, it was safe, he knew where his meals would come from, the other prisoners liked him, sometimes he wondered what it'd be like to be on the outside with you.
Would you let him live with you? If he knew you as well as he thought he did, you would.
What would that be like? The waking up with you in his arms, being the first thing he recognizes as he opens his eyes, seeing the sunlight warming your skin every morning.
Cooking with you, moving around your kitchen with ease. You'd enclosed some pictures in your letters, and you'd described your apartment to him, so he could almost perfectly visualize your space, and imagine himself in it.
He couldn't help but want it.
He shouldn't, not after the things he'd done, but he was a selfish man, and he never claimed to be anything else.
Finally it was his turn, he rushed out of his cell, the guard following behind him at a more leisurely pace. Yancy was antsy, ready to talk to you, to see your face again. He couldn't forget what you looked like, he had pictures, but nothing compared to being almost close enough to touch you.
That was another thing that had him considering applying for parole, he wanted to touch you. To hold your hand, to kiss you, to go to sleep at night with you wrapped in his arms, to wake up with you still there. His dreams of you weren't enough to hold him over.
You would never ask that of him, you knew he was happy, even though you missed him terribly. He could see it in your eyes just how much it hurt you to leave him, but you never said anything. You had never complained, not even once. The fact that you were willing to stay silent, just so he'd be happy, was just another reason to petition for parole.
As he waited for the guard to catch up, he thought about it all. He wondered how you'd react to him telling you he wanted to petition.
You'd be excited right?
You would. He had no reason at all to doubt you.
He was pretty sure his petition would be accepted too, because he had been on his best behavior. No escape attempts, no fights, he did what he was told, for the most part, and the guards liked him enough to vouch for him.
The guard finally caught up, Lenny he thinks the man's name was, and Lenny unlocked the door to the visitation area, letting Yancy through and closing it behind him. He'd been good enough that he got to sit with you by himself, no guard listening in.
As he sat down, he took just a moment to admire you before he picked up the phone. You looked happy to see him, but you also looked like you hadn't been sleeping. The dark circles under your eyes were much deeper than they were the last time he'd seen you. That wasn't good.
He picked up the phone, “hey sweetheart.”
“Hi Yancy,” you replied, voice light, but with an underlying exhaustion. You sounded a little raspy, like your throat was dry.
“Youse okay?” His brow furrowed as he really examined your face through the protective barrier.
You nodded, “yeah, just tired. Work's been a lot, I've had a lot of late nights, so taking care of everything that I need to do at home just gets pushed back later into the evening.”
But you didn't come to see him just to complain so you added, “but I'm okay, things like this happen sometimes, it's one of the downsides of being good at your job.”
Hopefully that convinced him.
It didn't.
You could tell, his brow was still furrowed, his head tilted as he looked at you. It would've been cute if it didn't make you feel guilty.
You only had about an hour with him, maybe a little more if the guards were feeling nice. You didn't want to waste it worrying him.
“What if youse didn't have it to do it alone?”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, I's been thinkin’ that.. I wanted t' apply for parole,” he continued, eyes not meeting yours, “and if I got approved, then you wouldn't have t’ keep doing everything all by yourself.”
“You'd apply for parole.. for me?”
“Youse come here every single Sunday for me,” he replied, “and I miss you, I don't wanna miss youse anymore, and if I was there with you, I wouldn't have to.”
He finally looked up at you, and saw your smile, and the tears welling in your eyes, happy ones he hoped, and knew deep down he'd made the right choice.
“I'm gonna petition after youse leave, and maybe by next visitation day you'll be pickin’ me up on th’ outside, as a free man.”
You were excited, for both yourself and him. Yancy had spent so long in prison, and he deserved his second chance at living life. He always said he was happy, that he preferred staying in jail, but how could he really know? Now he could find out what it was like to have a second chance.
“Would you want to live with me?” You asked, after the excitement passed enough that you could speak again.
“I was wantin’ to ask you about that,” he looked almost bashful, “I's didn't wanna assume, but.. I wanted to live with you. Y'know, wake up in th’ mornin’ with you, do all th’ domestic stuff together, if you wanted. I don't wanna impose.”
“Yancy, you could never impose,” you admonished gently, “I want you there, so you'll live with me when you get out.”
It was his turn to look excited, eyes wide, mouth agape. He hadn't expected you to agree so readily to let him share your space.
You must really love him.
“I do love you, silly man, a lot.”
He must have said that out loud, and it caused a blush to color his cheeks. He was grateful the prison lights were so dim that you probably wouldn't be able to see it.
You could, but you chose to let him keep some of his dignity.
The rest of your visitation time with Yancy was spent making plans. You wanted to pick up some new clothes and other necessities for him, so you had him give you a list of things he liked, and things he didn't. You'd get his sizes from the prison, one of the guards would tell you, or you'd write to the warden. Yancy was a favorite of theirs, sure he was a bit eccentric, but he was easy to manage.
The time flew by, and it felt like you'd barely blinked before the guard was coming back to collect Yancy, “alright, say your goodbyes, it's time for the next guy's turn,” he said.
You put your hand on the barrier, and he mimicked your gesture, “I love you, and I'll see you in a few weeks,” you said, swallowing harshly to try to stop yourself from crying.
He nodded, “I love youse too, and I mean it, I'm gonna petition, soon you'll get t’ see this ugly mug every single day. You'll be sick of me.”
“I could never be sick of you Yancy.”
That was the last thing you said before you had to put the phone down. You watched him walk back through the door before you got up and made your own way out.
You absolutely hated leaving him there. Every single time you left you had to sit in your car in the parking lot for at least ten minutes, sometimes more (usually more), just to work up the courage to drive away. This visit was no different.
Meanwhile, back in the prison, Yancy was talking to the guard, Lenny, on his way back to his cell, “yeah I's want th’ paperwork to apply for parole.”
“You leavin’ us Yancy?” The guard asked.
“Yeah, don't get me wrong, I do love it here, but.. I got somebody on th’ outside that I love more, and I wanna make up for all th’ time I spent in here instead of out there with them,” he replied.
Lenny nodded, he had a family of his own so he understood just how Yancy felt, “I'll talk to the warden, and we'll get you your papers.”
“Thanks Lenny,” Yancy smiled, stepping back into his cell.
The guard nodded as he locked it and moved down the line to get the next prisoner eligible for visitation.
Lenny kept his word, two days later he was handing Yancy a stack of forms and a pen, “just read these over, sign where it asks you to, and then the warden and the state will look it over, and if you're approved you'll be out in no time.”
Yancy had never been so excited to read over forms in his life. As he penned his signature on the first page, initialing on the line below as it indicated, he thought about you.
This was really all for you, and he was so ready for the next chapter of his life, the one he'd get to spend with you, to start.
Maybe he would get to leave with you when you came for his next visitation day. He could picture it now, leaving hand in hand with you, getting to hug you whenever he wanted.
He couldn't wait.
oh my god
i fucking love Yancy 😂💖
