07.02.13 Day 3: Fiji
Today started super early.. and ended early. It was a full day in an isolated area of Yanuca Island. My uncle booked an awesome excursion for us that involved:
An eventful boat ride to the island by some ridiculously entertaining guides. The weather wasn't the best today so the waves were quite large.. making our little boat sway/ bump around a lot! My brother and mum did not enjoy it due to some unexpected sea sickness..
Snorkling the reef. The coral and fish/animal life distracted me from my fear of swimming in deep areas/ inability to breathe solely through my mouth (insert mild panic attack initially trying to get used to snorkling here..)
Watermelon smashing. We played an entertaining game that involved placing a watermelon a distance away from the group, guessing the number of steps it took to get to the melon, and (blind folded) walking towards the melon with the set number of guessed steps. The point: to smash the melon with a stick! It sounds silly, but was so much fun.. and even more fun for me since I was the few who reach the watermelon and only one to smash it!
Kava drinking in the traditional Fijian way. This is the first time I've tried grog and probably won't ever again. It reminds me of soap. The numbing sensation it provides is not incentive enough to try it again..
Watching the locals weave baskets from coconut tree leaves. Coolest. Thing. Ever.
Mini hike up the Yanuca mountain.
Lovo lunch. My first time eating a lovo cooked meal! It was even better knowing/ watching the Chief of the island make and serve it!
Coconut nomming! One of the guides climbed a nearby tree, picked a bunch for us, and machete cut it so we could drink/ eat it. I wish we could get this sort of quality coconut at home.. the flesh was sooooooooooo good! I'll be sure to indulge in more local coconuts during our time here!
My Tuesday here was by far the best as of now! I'm a fan of exploring and getting to know the traditional ways/ beauty of a place I'm visiting. Aside from the masssss number of bug bites I got, I loved Yanuca!
